I've heard that when it gets freaky cold outside, it's not unusual to develop frost on the portion of the OAK inside your house. Has anyone seen this, and if so - does it ever get to the point where when the frost "melts" there's enough moisture to drip on the floor (or whatever is beneath your OAK?) If so, what do you do to deal with that, if anything?
Yes and Yes. I put a cheap aluminum throw away pan underneath mine. Mine is snow white with frost when it get's really cold.
The OAK on my Napoleon NZ3000 ZC fireplace does this. I wrapped it with non-flammable foiled insulation to help, and also put a drip tray underneath it.
I noticed it on mine after I installed. Still need to wrap some insulation on it, but I foamed around it where it comes through the wall (remodelling the room, so easy access).
Mine does it too. I have a slight dip in the oak so the drips run to a specific spot, and then have a little plastic container there to catch the drops. It's not a lot of liquid, but enough to make a bit of a mess if I don't.
Have the downstairs OAK wrapped in insulation for the first several feet, so although frost probably develops, I don't see it.. I've seen frost on the main floor OAK but don't do anything special for it. The hearth pad is under it, so it wouldn't hit my hardwood flooring. And my house is so arid during winter that it would probably evaporate long before it dripped the 2 feet to the floor. I would assume those with the systems that combine the OAK and the exhaust pipe don't have that issue as the air is pre-warmed coming in.
Mine does too, I just put a little tray under it. I'm actually using the tray that came with my toaster oven.
The Oak on my Fahrenheit pellet furnace develops some frost, but I have the same length run on my woodstove and it doesn't. The only difference is that woodstove Oak is panted black. The pellet furnace is unpainted. I may experiment this winter and paint the furnace OAK black. If it stops the drip, it would be worth it. It's possible the black paint gives it just enough more heat to stop the frost? Woodstove set up Pellet furnace set up
I bet he blames the last bit on the Mrs. I wanna be a beer hoarder when I grow up. Except I only seem to hoard the empties??
That's Mrs. Dex, the wife.. She had a problem last year with couponing. I guess it wasn't a bad problem. It was all super (Super) cheap. But we had plenty. LOL
Mrs Well Seasoned tried couponing. Yes, good deals to be had, and i went up a beltsize or two because of it!
