Question. I researched septics before the internet was popular, the material I read said the layers were Top = scum layer Middle = liquid Bottom = sludge I have seen conflicting things since then, including talking to you. Is it all the same with a difference in symantics? Or does the heavy black crap actually live near the top?
You are going to be so happy to sit on your throne, and not worry about the bath tub bubbling up etc. What a horror story to endure. Good luck with the right system.
Heavy crud settles to the bottom, lighter than water things like paper, oils, grease, etc float to the top... gray water somewhere in between. Baffle is in place to only allow the gray water out into the leach bed. If a tank isn't pumped out over time (I think they recommend every 3-5 years), the amount of solids (sludge) builds up and eventually overflows the baffle and then, it doesn't take very long for a leach field to get plugged.
Thanks Larry! It will surely be a relief to flush and bath without wondering (and avoiding stink) Like Stinny said, now is better than when everything is frozen in Jan and we have no options...... Way too much savings going to this but it is the right thing to do!
It might be a lot now but it would be more in the middle of winter when they are trying to rip frost. Even better they got in earlier than expected.
wildwest I am so glad it will be done right. There should be 2 covers on new tank.. one closer to house to scrape bottom of tank and a front one . If he doesn't do it now think of putting in a filter before waste going to leach lines. Basically looks like a 1 foot tall 6 inch wide little louvered door. Some new ones look like clear balls with screen around.. yes it's a PITA to clean it (rinse with garden house) 2 times a year but really makes your leech lines last longer. Especially if you got kids.. Let me know if you need a pic.. For you I would reopen tank but would rather not. oh I have green risers on tank as my tank top is 4 to 5 feet underground..
Pics to come a bit later.... Yep, TWO covers Thanks, and Stihl Livin sent me a video on them. I requested one, our septic guy is not a fan of them....... Seems like a great idea though.
My unwanted shed saga is almost over!! DH will take some old windows out of it tonight and it will be pushed over tomorrow Stinny We will have a bonfire with it this winter meanwhile a better location for one of the leach lines. That shed is a cool looking old shed but we don't need it or use it, and it blocks my view. I have offered it for free, nobody can move it.....
I am disgusted and angry. The excavator found a dead dog under the shed. Collar and chain intact. I heard stories the renters would leave dozens of pets here for weeks at a time during the harsh winter months, no food, no water, and wow the damage we repaired from the pets using the house as a toilet was bad enough to begin with. But this is entirely different level.
