venting

pellet stove going into existing masonry chimney.
im gonna cut a hole into the chimney for the 3" pipe and go with that for now.

 

you can only cut once....

 

crazy question comes to mind......if the flue exists already, why not use the thimble already in place for connection? Is it the only appliance in that particular flue? (hopefully!)

 

Skeeter, were you looking for some advice / help or just making a statement? Like LW, I was wondering why not just adapt into the existing thimble, assuming there is one?

 

I wouldn't recommend that....once cut, that cast iron will be forever cut......so, if the stove were to be removed, the cut remains. If he is venting up thru the damper, throw in a liner, and use a blockoff plate to block the part of the damper not covered by the liner. As for knocking a hole thru the masonry into an existing chimney, I'd really have to wonder why this is happening....frankly, NOT a great idea, unless ABSOLUTELY necessary....could compromise the integrity of the chimney, and also cause a possible CO leak......

 

well, yea.....what chimney has no entrance for an appliance? Maybe a fireplace?

 

there is no thimble,there is no fireplace,im cutting a hole in the chimney to install 3" pipe for pellet stove,and yes its the only appliance.

 

had a furnace in the celler,so now im cutting a hole into the flue on the ground level floor.

 

im not doing the 3"to 6" adapter so it looks like a wood stove,that adapter pushes it too far out into the room away from the masonry,i want the stove up tight against the chimney,its bad enough its got this big honkin appendage thing for the blower on the back.plus its(exhaust) offset.

 

so, if i understand this right, you're no longer using the thimble from the old furnace in the basement, and you're going to punch a hole higher into the same flue, insert the metal pellet pipe, and cement the space between the pipe and the hole with refractory cement? First thing here would be to make darn sure that other opening in the basement is firmly sealed....wouldn't want CO migrating down there.......and I mean sealed, not just a metal plug placed in the opening. As for the pipe being cemented into the flue, not all that great an idea, as expansion and contraction of the pipe due to heat.cold will cause the mortar to crack and/or break out, thereby allowing CO into the home...not good. IMO, the correct way to do this would be to make a hole big enough for a clay thimble, use refractory cement to cement it in place, then use an appropriate adapter to allow connection to your pellet pipe.....different companies have different methods and adapters to do this.......

Who said anything about cementing a pipe in?? im gonna put a 4" liner in with a 4"-3"X6" masonry adapter into 6" thimble then 3" ventis double wall pipe with built in silicone gaskets to a 3"x3" offset with a clean out door.

You do mention a 6" thimble in your post #17, and in the original post, you mention you're "gonna cut a hole in the chimney"......no mention of a liner anywhere above, from what I see. Don't see a mention of a liner anywhere till post #17. So, maybe I am a bit confused here?

 

sorry......i just get a little crazy some times,plus i have heard that you get confused.
