I may be wrong but the elm I've dealt with usually looks like that when it's dried out for a while. And the DED is caused by disease carrying beetles, and they make beetle marks as the borrow under the bark. But like I said I may be wrong, I've never seen ash in person so it may very well be ash.
There may be elm in there somewhere. So far none of the light colored wood I have gotten is hard to split. Ash just flies apart with the maul. The red elm on the other hand, complete pita to split.
Well, compared to the well behaved ash it is my firewood problem child. I have some big rounds of it that might be deemed firepit stump stools.
I have a splitter on my rewards list for being cigarette free for ten years. That date is fast approaching on January 13th. There is always tons of them listed on CL here. Right now there are two different Huskee 22 ton splitters listed at 700. I warned my SO that I wanted a big reward for my ten year mark.
If you can't afford the splitter a wedge is a good idea. It's basically shaped like an axe head and you push it into the wood by pounding it with a maul. It will force the wood apart. I did that with all of the white elm I came across that was too big to split with a splitting maul.
Oh but not on the crotch pieces. Had the wedge stuck real good the other day. That ugly chunk got thrown on the campfire pile haha, after I rescued my wedge!
I need to fix my WJ, it is made for towing... came with the towing package. It has trans cooler and everything. The ZJ does not have a hitch yet, but due to a recall involving possible gas tank problems in the event of a rear collision the Jeep dealership is installing hitches on all ZJs to block an impact per the recall. The problem to me is, if I take my ZJ to a dealer they are gonna wanna fix everything else that is wrong with it. Let's just say I would not let anyone else drive my jalopy... should get that power steering back online someday haha. My to-do list is longer than the Great Wall Of China.
my ZJ came with an aftermarket trailer hitch when I got it but, I have seen lots of them in the junk yard you can get for cheap, you just have to take them off, many parts on mine came out of the junk yard, rear hatch struts too, hint hint
Just let FCA add the hitch and you'll be fine for towing. My zj didn't have the factory for package and I hauled my 3000 lb ski nautique all over the state with it. I also towed a ton of other things with it. It's a recall, that they had to be fined for because they didn't act upon the recall they had to issue. Demand they fix it. They won't have time to fix anything else with these and will want to get these unprotected zj's taken care of asap. They've probably got the hitches waiting for vehicles to put them on. There been a ton of wrist slaps for this. What's wrong with the wj? I've crawled around and under the wj Ltd we had a few times.
Not much, it has the 4.7ho v8 and that particular engine is prone to spitting off it's rocker arms. I took off the driver side valve cover and that is not the side with the problem. The passenger side valve cover is buried under lots of things that need removed to get at it. Just been putting it off. Ran perfect up until that point. The lash adjusters get gummed up and sometimes when you shut down the motor they will stay compressed. You go to start the motor and the compressed lash adjuster does not hold the rocker arm tight againt the roller and it just falls off. Dodges with the same motor also experience this annoying problem. With the Jeep they crammed such a big motor in with the 4.7ho that there is zero room to work. I miss my old Econline van, I could practically just sit in they engine compartment. Nothing fancy there.
We had the regular 4.7 v8 in our wj. Never had that problem, but yeah, almost all cars nowdays have so much crap plumbed around then it's tough to work on stuff.
