Yeah if you want all wheel Drive definitely Subaru. got a 2013 forrester on 100 mile plus trip I get it to avg. 30. They do not drop in value here... if not Honda or Toyota as above.
Nearly all the local (winter) residents here are either Subaru (Imprezza, Outback, Forester), Toyota, or Honda CRV. Had the pleasure to drive both the new Imprezza and Outback, both have excellent interior layout and fitment, both are quiet, move and handle excellent. Lots of room in the Outback. If I was looking for a new vehicle, Subaru would be on my list here.
Ditto here as Saab went under, original post said North Dakota why I mentioned Subaru. on a foot of snow days you see Trucks and Subarus. 100 mikes a day gas on truck would be more than car payment!
Yep, I vote yota. I drive an Audi, and know a lot about the vw's, since Audi is the premium brand of vw. I wouldn't own an Audi or a vw, without the existence of forums. Vw's are nice, but if or when something goes, the German made car will cost a lot more than the Japanese ones will. Honda's are decent, but in the price range you are looking at, you'll find that the Honda's are not what they used to be. Quality, fit and finish went by the wayside from the mid late 90's until recently. I'd steer far clear of any cvt trannied Nissan. They don't make cvts very well, and that tranny if it goes could cost half as much as the car is worth. Ford focus's ( foci) are great cars. I have a 70 Mile round trip for work. I've been mulling over foci, or vw gti hatchbacks. A wrx Subaru is another option. All would be stick, because I don't drive the freeways in bumper to bumper traffic. I've got awd and ride height adjustability on my Audi. Most days I need neither of that. Many days I take my motorcycle. A golf or jetta TDI are great on fuel. I know his with them and they get 50 mpg. But those tdis keep very high resale. So, that would take a while to overcome when gasoline is pretty cheap. I drove a Honda fit sport for a couple days. It was great on gas, kinda sporty, at least handling wise, but cramped for my 6'4” frame, and the interior was a hard plastic wasteland. If you buy a golf or jetta, the interior at least looks and feels like a much more expensive car, like my Audi. Spending 2 hours a day on s car should be enjoyable as it can be.
Still see a fair amount of Saabs on the road here, especially the mid-late '90 models, including a few convertibles this past summer. Have fond memories of plowing through snow on winter roads in my youth in a Saab, those (80's) cars were built like tanks, and just as heavy.. Chalk another one up to GM.. sigh. more progress.
Agree w/ the Hondas, owned an 02' Civic 2 dr. EX model, lots o' plastic even then, but comfortable seats and a highly efficient 1.8L motor w/ the 5 speed trans. used to get 39-43 MPG commuting from New Hampshire to New Jersey regularly, so that made up for the plastics shortfall. Learned later of issues reported w/ the automatics and CVT transmissions of that era and forward. You make an excellent point: when commuting, the car should be as enjoyable as efficient, life is too short to be in a vehicle that is uncomfortable for hours each day.
We turned down a KILLER deal on a truck, the manual seat had minimal adjustments.....Not good when one goes 150 miles per day on average.
No, but after you see and feel a soft leather type dash, real aluminum, real wood, etc, you don't want to go back. On Audi's, it is what it looks like. If it's silver, and looks like aluminum, it's aluminum, same with wood etc....
GM put some Honda blood in a few cars as well. Buddy of mine drives a Saturn Vue with a Honda 4 banger and a 5spd.
Don't overlook Lexus or Acura either. A coworker just bought Acura's version of a Civic for less than what he would have paid for the Civic. It kinda fell into his lap, but there may be deals out there for somebody looking to unload their current car quickly so they can upgrade.
Is that the ILX? It intrigues me, basically a Civic SI with leather seats and a slightly softer ride. I heard they're no longer putting manual transmissions in an Acura's now, which kinda sux.
My cousin has a Vue with the Honda v6. Biggest POS, ever. The motor's knocking at under 100k, and its spent a ton of time and $ being repaired. These are handy people too, it wasn't abused and they know how to work on cars.
