I snagged this load as I was coming home from work last night, tree had been dead standing for quite a while so I am eager to see how dry it is once it's css.
Dead standing, that one should be super dry already. But don't go by the top of the tree, grab a couple of the lower parts to check for moisture because if there is much, that is where you'll find it.
Red maple dries pretty quickly so if it was dead standing you should be good to go. Great wood to mix in with some harder stuff, I like it as it is my primary hardwood in my area and it coals up pretty good. Good stuff you got there.
Welcome and nice score. That picture should be added to this thread: http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/loaded-family-car-pics.8484/
Welcome Keweenaw. Glad you found us. you must have some kind of firewood sickness to be filling up your car with wood... you'll fit in just fine here....
I got to it today, some of the splits from the bigger pieces are not quite dry yet but I figure if I can burn shoulder wood until late November It should be passable
I'm really likin' the Red lately. After a little Pine fire died last night, I put 3 Red splits in and when I got up this am, the stove was still warm-ish. House was fairly comfy too, with an outside temp of 37.
I did just about the same thing two nights ago, trying to burn some spruce I cut but it's almost like you can't get any real heat out of it. Threw three maple splits on before bed and still had coals six hours later and the house at 78.
I use the Pine a lot in the shoulders, and that fire was just to get the stove hot and make some coals before throwing the Red in. It worked.
Yeah, it's coming. A few warm days on the way, but it won't last long. We're usually burning part-time by the last week of Sept. I'm gettin' dizzy watching the forecast. It changes so fast, I don't know if I should go outside with a raincoat, a parka, or a t-shirt. Easier to just look out the window and get out there, then deal with whatever.
Red Maple dries out fast. Keep the sun on it and the rain off it and it should be fine come late November.
