Not sure where the EIA gets its numbers but a quick search for Ohio gas prices yields this:

    http://www.puco.ohio.gov/puco/index.cfm/apples-to-apples/

Seems to indicate that prices can be a little lower. Perhaps EIA only uses highest retail prices or something. Not sure. Perhaps someone from Ohio can pipe in (pun intended) with what they actually pay.

That's just amazing.. Wholesale spot price around $4.50....
    http://www.cmegroup.com/trading/energy/natural-gas/natural-gas_quotes_globex.html
Then about $11.50 to get it to your house.... Well, not your house.. Your house would cost a lot more!!! Trying to remember what the price was in winter 05-06 but I had an apartment building and one of the apartments had a $1000 gas bill for one month in the winter.. Ate up almost all of the rent that month!!

I've heard there is no pipeline in Mass. and that affects the cost.. If NG was available I'd have it but people are spread out in this town and it would cost too much to pipe this area..

True, natural gas is shipped in for Massachusetts. I have it and enjoy it when we need it as a backup for the heating system and I have it for hot water.
Still my monthly bill is rarely over $28.00. Even in outages its nice to have because it still runs despite no electric, you can still cook and get hot water

There are indeed natural gas pipelines that ship gas from points southwest into MA.

    http://www.eia.gov/pub/oil_gas/natural_gas/analysis_publications/ngpipeline/ngpipelines_map.html

The issue is the capacity of those lines. If they were to size them for the coldest day of the year, they wouldn't be profitable or ridiculously expensive to install and maintain. That's why the utilities "push" gas from the other end of the pipeline. Thus the LNG tankers that pull into Boston Habah all the time. If not for the LNG tankers, New England would run out of NG on the coldest days of the winter..

I'd have to say if that ever blew a huge portion of the city would go with it. Since 911 they have given it some extra attention but if someone really wants to, they could.

My November bill for gas was $11.67. (1.01CCF). The delivery of that gas cost 32.11.

Still talk about NG pipeline from the North slope thru Canada to lower 48.
Be nice to get NG to Fairbanks, Glenn Allen & Valdez , been talked about.
Plans for LNG plants to ship it overseas.
"Political talk "to get elected then nothing happens. Talk more around election time.

$9/1000 CF is a good price,
I don't worry if the furnace kicks on.
But used for hot water & cooking, heat for shop & garage, OK price.

Being at the end of the Natural Gas pipe is part of the reason why our electric rates are tending to go up in Winter.
NSTAR-electric residential will be (Jan 1, 2014 ) 9.33¢/kwh -generation, plus 14.3¢ delivery. 23.63¢/kwh which puts us 2nd highest rate with Hawaii being higher. New York is pretty close to 2nd place too, iirc.

    Where you ?

    We have ENSTAR in AK.
Wondering if you have the same gas co.

Thought " fracking" & lots of NG supply was making NG cheaper?

It gets pricey at the end of the pipe, in cold weather, supply and demand takes its toll.

The local utils have been forced into buying into the offshore wind farm, like it or not so we are going to pay 2 or 3 cents /kwh for that soon if we aren't already. Half or 2/3 of our electric is gas now ( oil generators were converted ) so we are pretty much at the mercy current gas prices.
