Ok, So I Smacked my finger yesterday. Has anybody used the red hot paper clip method to relieve the pressure? Any advice? It moves and has feelings, it's just starting to build up pressure under the nail. One picture was yesterday and the other was from today. This is my first good smack of my finger area.

The paper clip works, you'll know exactly when you've gone far enough. Won't take but a second.

Yes I have. The first time in '78 (a vivid memory). The last time 3 weeks ago. Relief comes immediately when the blood starts shooting out.

image.jpg A hot needle, MIG wire or tiny drill bit spun between your fingers will also work. This was a drill bit.

Ouch! Bet most of us have had this problem in the past. It hurts. I recall one time I smashed a finger and within a very short time the fingernail was at about a 45 degree angle. Sure felt better when relieved and we just used a needle that we sterilized.

I've used the hot paper clip thing many times in the ER. It is quick. Have someone else do it. You can drill it, but that is slow torture from the pressure. Hold the paper clip with plyers, heat it until it glows red, then touch the black part of the fingernail lightly. The blood will burst right out and you will feel better instantly.

The paper clip trick is great.

Well Thank you guys for all the answers. I did it last night while the sight was down and worked like a charm. It was quite interesting how the red hot paper clip goes through the nail. As soon as it hit that depth, the relief was immediate. Quite interesting. I don't mind pain, just hate blood. So I made sure that I was sitting down while I did it... :D

Glad you got the pressure out. That always seemed to be the most painful part.

I sunk one of these hook tools into my finger a few weeks ago. Right behind the cuticle almost a 1/4" deep. Worst part was I had my hand and fingers stuck between some steel hydraulic lines when it happened and couldn't pull my finger out because the handle wouldn't fit between the lines. Had to wiggle it pretty hard to get it to come out of my finger. No pressure though because it bled pretty good for a while.
