Took down a little hemlock to make way or a red oak I'm going to get at within walking distance of the wood shed and decided to take some pictures of my progress as I've been off the site for a while. First of the wood shed and then some of my gear(chainsaw and single bit axe). And one of the rounds I have let to split. The last one is of bass wood, or at least what we call basswood up here, and one o it's bark. Very similar to oak but makes crappy firewood. And one of a downed white ash. Hemlock is all split and stacked.

I mean if you really want to spend the time cutting splitting and stacking it it's about as good rotted hemlock.:p Reeks too.

Nice job - still too hot for me to fire up the saws - about 8 cord of trees laying across the street that have been waiting for the saws - dropped them all in late May - hoping to start in a few weeks!

I started working around 8 am when it's still cool after the night. It's too hot now though, hitting mid 80's. Time to work on the car now.

No idea what it really is as far as scientific breed but I've heard it called poplar before. All I know is I don't touch.

    Poplar?
Got some in the stacks right now, and plan to get more. It's slightly better than Pine, and I use it in the shoulders for a quick fire.
Easy to css. Guys around here call it gofer wood, as in......."go fer some more of that wood, this already burned up".:picard:

Not sure if that is what it really is. I know people here avoid it like they do pine and hemlock. I've only css a small tree of it and didn't like it too much.:picard:

My theory is why use the good wood (Oak) when a little Poplar will do. I'll save the better stuff for when it actually gets cold.
A lot of folks avoid those because of some very old beliefs that aren't true if the wood is dry.
    Just my .02
SisIL has quite a few pretty large ones at her place....I'm very surprised they got as big as they did. They usually break or fall over if you even look at 'em wrong. They have a place in my arsenal.

They hemlock and pine I have split and stacked in the wood shed is bone dry, I'll be using that with the red maple I've got for the shoulder seasons, then my cherry oak and ash will be getting used for the dead of winter. Now all I need is about 3 more chord to be 3 years ahead.

    Good job, Upstatewoodcutter.
What we call basswood 'round here also called linden is prized by wood carvers. Grows fast like crazy and dries very light weight. I left some rounds out in the weather 2 years and it became compost. I should have split & stacked it alot quicker.

Add a little Poplar to that mix.:p:picard::rofl:
Pretty sure I've found exactly 2 Hemlock on our property, and both are down in the swampy area.

Yeah this wood I cut is the same way dried right out and was light as a feather and didn't burn very hot or long. I believe it turns right into compost, just like white birch. It's stinks really bad when cut.

The lot I cut in is mostly hemlock, and silver maple. Down by the stream is where all the white birch and other hard woods are. Can't get to them really though as I don't have a way to drag them out.:headbang:

Oh boy. In that 4th picture, I'd like to have that tree just to the left of the woodshed. There used to be lots of it around here but mostly in pastures and fencerows. Now not much used for pastures and you have to go a long ways to find fence rows except for around some small barnyards or horse pens.
