I think that picture was taken either by Grayling or Newberry but don't remember for sure. I've seen it many times and one time remember reading a story about it.

I don't know, those poor beasts must be solid muscle if they can pull that load. What happens when they come to and incline/decline? Is this just staged for effect, or is it really the way things were done. The funny thing about all this is that if you look at human history from a given point in time and look either backward or forward a sufficient period of years, you end up asking the same question: how is that possible?

You must be referring to the way they are leaning on their tools.. That can be dangerous! Good thing the guy at the top has his cant hook, he would have never rolled those logs up top without it!!!
