I checked my HD today and was shocked. This store is in a rural area and I have never seen more than 50 tons on site!! 237 tons?? Wow, I guess they don't want to miss any sales this season!!
And Doug, just in case you say "yeah, but that's for C.O.D only!", here's an ad from last Sunday's paper.....and yes, the prices are real. I bought from this company when I was in the last house. And no "haggling" involved.
Ya see, the problem Doug has here is that he doesn't live anywhere near here, and he's depending on NEW YORK STATE to monitor this?????? Big mistake.....they can't even monitor themselves.
There you go....so pull out the BTU calculator and it is cheaper to burn with heating oil I guess than pellets currently.....but to my point, most people will never do that (not all) and price if you are buying our Douglas Fir pellets, probably wasn't a big priority to start with....which is why people will spend $360+ a ton for them and yet heating oil is as low as it is currently...a very good segment of the market could care less what the cost of heating oil is...they are still going to burn pellets ....simply because they prefer the heat...cost aside..... But to your point....you are right on pricing in your area and I stand corrected..........wow, did he really just say that....
Pete I know exactly what your saying as I grew up in New York , Check that I lived their for the 1st 20 + years of my life , But I've Never Grown up
Doug, let me ask you this. You have been saying mills have been maxed out the last couple of years. Barley getting enough to market. You also say sales are up this year. So why so many pellets everywhere? Boxes, Dealers seems to have plenty, your rail yard in Upton.
That's what PFI uses as their "default" number. I remember seeing that figure in some Englander literature too. The oil burner % was what my burner was tested at last year in the old house. I was giving pellets the "benefit of a doubt" figure. If you put pellet burner % lower (let's say 70%), the scenario is even worse...... Pellets - $31.36
Bottom line for me...I will heat my house with whatever fuel is cheapest! Doug if oil, propane and electric were cheaper than pellets, I don't think anyone of us would have a pellet stove. If you want a fire for ambiance, there is nothing better than a fireplace burning hardwood sucking the oil, electric or propane heat straight up the chimney!
As I (and many others) have said, it's all about having choices. Prices are going to change, I get it.
