My wife was picking raspberries and I drove up along side of the fence with the atv. Looked down and saw this. Never seen anything like it. Possibly the start of a puffball or something like that? Looked sort of like a carrot. Extremely soft as you barely touch it and it moves. The green stuff would get on your finger and looked like chit. Sadly, I was back there later and found that it had cracked near the base so we won't know what it was to be for sure. Now something extremely odd. In the bottom picture you see that I laid some keys to show the size. But in both pictures you will also see something black. Looks like something plastic. While viewing the pictures I could not remember seeing that when we were back there and neither did my wife remember anything there. So, I took the atv back to see what it is. Well, it is gone! Now that is strange.
You have to get them quick. Usually can find right after a warm rain. Quite often found around dead trees, especially dead elm. When all else fails, look near Boyne Mountain.
The only hardwoods we have are Vine Maple, poplar, alder, arbutus (south island), cottonwood and maybe birch. If there is anything else, it was brought in and planted. Our main trees are Douglas fir, balsa fir, hemlock, western red cedar, yellow cedar, pine and spruce.
