That reminded me, some years ago I found out that an old guy that we used to attend church with, Elwood Edwards, was the "you've got mail" voice. Would've never guessed it, I didn't believe it for the longest time, thought I was gettin my leg pulled, turned out true.
I am thinking of doing the upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10. Anyone having any major problems with the upgrade?
I am getting around pretty well on win10, though I struggled through win8 to learn how to use it. I'd love to hear what others say.
I didn't have a big problem with the upgrade as far as the download and such, but it did take a long time. I have Win7 on my other laptop, and I think I will keep it on there. I guess it's all what you are used to, and what you want out of a PC. This little one that I did upgrade, I pretty much use it for looking stuff up on the internet, checking e-mail and talking to you folks. The other one I use for spreadsheets, files, printing and documents. I am used to 7 at work. Frankly, I see no real improvement with Win10.
Well, I did it. Upgraded to Win 10 and it went rather quick. I noticed that pictures from FHC load quicker which is Gooder. Had a bit of anxiety as my homegroup wasn't working but just had to reconnect. I guess as time goes by, I'll see if it was worth. Really liked my Win 7 though.
I am still having intermittent problems with webpages spinning their wheels once in a while, and I don't really see much advantage over 7 myself. Had to uninstall and reinstall the Norton, that was a pain. Haven't figured out what any of these other "features" are, as I don't have a smart phone or anything. Almost dumped 10 and reloaded 7, but decided to give it another chance. It must have read my mind, because it is behaving pretty well today.
Thank you for giving me the heads up!! I did the "custom" install and turned tracking off. This was on the Denver news tonight. It was on an ongoing segment called "doesn't that stink" LOLOL.
Something else to consider is the auto update........you don't control much of it, so if you're close to your data cap and an update comes in, it could cause an overage. Lots of potential security gaps....some can be turned off, and some we don't know about. Yet. The "always connected" "features" are a big part of that. I'm back on Linux. Mint, to be exact. Still have 10 on the original drive that came with the laptop.
I have been having Internet performance issues with my desktop and Win 10. Mainly YouTube videos in buffering hell but some picture heavy websites were pretty slow to load as well. Did a speed test and I was getting 1.06Mb down, something much better than that up. Hmmmm. My iPhone, wife's iPad and her laptop are all fine, and the Rokus have been streaming HD video (NetFlix/YouTube) just fine. Double hmmm. Disabled the "Windows Defender" firewall and now those YouTube vids play much better (not HD but at least they play more than they buffer now....) and much of the website lag is gone. Mega Hmmmmm. I will re-speed test it tonight with the firewall down and compare it with a test on another device.
You would think that with W10 being deployed to everything from a phone to a data server, that it would be smart enough to know if its on a metered connection or not.
I cannot find where to schedule win updates for 2 am, is this option gone? Also, for a 2 am update, do I need to leave my computer on overnight?
I don't know if it'll wake itself up to do that or not. Since I'm back on Linux, I'm not sure if that option is still available. I always told it to just let me know when updates were ready, then I'd decide what and when.
haven't upgraded to 10 yet... but second question I believe yes your machine needs to be on, connected to the net otherwise it can't really get any updates, unless win10 has the ability to access your computer when it's turned off - in which case I'm not downloading it
Go into Windows Update in Control Panel.....it's in there somewhere. Should be on the main part of that window.
Here is a link about how to do the updates. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/getstarted-choose-how-updates-are-installed
Just thought I would mention that the web browser you use can seriously affect video.Heck I use and old xp machine hooked to tv,usb dongle for wifi,at&t dongle plugged into router upstairs(very slow internet). Was watchable with IE,but lots of lag.Switched to firefox and now seems like I have different internet provider, video is that much faster and clearer.Don't know why(smokey would know),but browsers and add ons can really affect video.Bob.
Chrome/Firefox/Edge all performing in the same craptacular manner. Haven't used that machine in a few days but I'll get back 'round to it someday!
