This afternoon I dumped a 70 year old arborvitae that died last spring. It was about 35 inchs at the root crown and around 65 feet tall. It was hollow almost all the way up so I chained it cuz of some obstacles. Well, after I cleaned up the mess and dumped the rounds off back where I do my splitting I sat down for a time in the cool sunshine of the afternoon to just relax and enjoy the day for a time. I kept hearing this strange cracking noise. Well, it turns out as I put my ear closer to the rounds I had dumped that it was the wood just relaxing and starting to crack. At first I thought it was flashbacks to the 70's but I am sure that tree was just happy to be destined for the far pit on Labor day weekend. But no B.S. them rounds where cracking in the sun and starting to check.
That's a gooder deal there Butcher The dead standing aspen(thx for the ID, Paul bunion) was checked minutes after I unloaded it from the truck this afternoon. Some of the branches were dry enough to hit the firepit tonite( not wood snobbing, Canadian border VT ). Pics of your upcoming arborvitae fire @ Labor Day?
Butcher, we had some pine like that at dad camp. Carpenter ants ate a third out of middle of tree. don't split one of the rounds stand it up on a bed of coals. it makes a cool chimney type fire in a pit and burn inside out for a long time!
70s! Butcher, I just had a picture of you with a huge collared shirt and doin a dance. But at least you were discoing by the bonfire! A-Hem. Lord, I apologize.
