How Hot does a MT V top get?

does the top get on one of these pellet stoves? im going to install a mt vernon this year and wondering if i can cook on it or just warm things up?

 

You will not cook on it.Most even have a hard time evaporating water fast.

 

I don't know about your stove but I can touch mine with a bare hand .

 

Mine doesn't get hot unless you're wearing tighty whitey's when loading pellets!!

 

Really, even the P43? The firebox of my P43 and P68 get blazing hot like a wood stove (one of the main reasons I bought the Harman P-series stoves). The top doesn't get quite as hot because of the heat exchanger in between, but if I'm burning a seriously hot pellet and the stove body gets up to 450 - 550 degrees, a pot of water will bubble on top. I leave a water kettle on there all season to humidify the air in the room, and it evaporates surprisingly fast.

 

My mt v e2 insert does not get warm on the top.

 

Hi.i agree,the firebox will get very hot.The stove he bought has a liner(firebox) and the outside will not get that hot.My accentra is single layer,and the sides can get very hot,the top cannot because that is where the room air is coming out.Most pellet stoves were designed to be a "continious heat",not massive heat.Most(all that I know of) reccomend never running on high except for short periods.I also leave a pan on mine,but neither could ever get that hot to bubble the water,unless I ran them wide open for 3-4 hrs.On the other hand,my accentra radiates much heat,from its design,and my integra,if running above 1/2,you cannot stand in front of it,less than 4 foot away.I have only serviced 2 harman p's,and I think you are overfiring your stoves.Just my opinion,do not want to make an enemy.

 

My Mt V freestander does not even warm up on top.

Definitely not over-firing. The stove is really just stretching it's legs, it's just what the P-series stoves do. I'm primarily describing the behavior I have observed with the P68, that's the stove that does the brunt of the heating work in the house. The P43 is situated in a smaller area and doesn't need to work as hard to keep that area warm. The P68 I generally run at feed rate 3.5, room temp mode, set between 65 - 70 degrees. That's about the extent of my control over it. It's got a big area to heat and the stove's gonna do what it needs to in order to achieve and maintain the temp. On really cold days, 450 is the minimum temp the stove needs to achieve to be useful. If it gets up to 500+, so much the better. And I agree, at that temp, don't even think about standing right in front of the stove for more than a few seconds.

My P61a-2 Harmys will melt a bag of pellets in seconds if they touch it! Very hot about 500 Degs!

The Quad Contour has a pie warmer shelf that gets up to 140 Degrees. Holds up to 10" pies!

I have a friend that puts dinner plates on his P43 to warm them up before sitting down at the table!

im pretty sure they put the "high" setting on my stove so that i can run it on high.

 

Then the tight area gets shiny after which it becomes charred and the eatonpcat runs out the door looking for a snow bank..

 

I'm beginning to think eatonpcat needs to change his screen name to Ron Jeremy.

 

I haven't hooked that bad boy up yet , I'm getting ready to, redoing the hearth from the wood burner first. It sounds from your experience the top will get hot enough for a kettle of water to steam , thanks for the info TT
