So, I upgraded to a Galaxy S6 the other day. No less than 3 days later, I forgot to flip down my flippy cap on the gas tank of my saw after a refill and spilled mix on my brand new phone. $150 and several days later, I've got a refurb. replacement. Ugh!
This saw hobby ruined a brand new pair of jeans and boots when I was pizz revving a junk saw fix that apparently leaked like a, well a junkie Homelite. Sorry about the phone, it sux. Phone goes in back pocket when doing pretty much anything besides sitting.
Yep. Chalk up one more vote for the haters. Flippy caps suck, in my opinion. I too, have experienced the shame of having to tear my pants off in the middle of the woods because my balls were soaked in gasoline. Cap fell off right after i refilled with fuel. Good times.
Another hater here. I much prefer the flip caps on my husky. They flip up for a good grip but have a regular thread. By the time I carefully line up stihl caps I can screw the caps into my husky and be off cutting. Never a leak. I could do without the outboard clutch however. Although I have to say forgetting to flip them down is not why they suck. Turning them, flipping them down, turning over the saw only to have the cap fall out of the saw even though you thought they were lined up but nope you missed is why they suck IMO.
I can picture this as a scene in a tree hugger Bambi remake ... all the animals laughing and pointing as the evil wood cutter gets what he deserves! We can only hope it happens before the fire scene I guess there is a benefit to owning a decades old saw.
I remember the first time that happened to me. I was using a buddy's saw, and spilled gas all over me when the flippy cap leaked. I thought, "no big deal, gas evaporates pretty quick". Next thing I know it feels like I had a swarm of fire ants in my pants! I couldn't get my boots and pants off fast enough!! I was at a buddy's grandma's house picking up some firewood. She had no idea why some guy was stripping in her back yard!
When they work they are great. For some reason I just don't get along with them. In the end, it's always been "operator error."
Flippy caps may suck, but I leave the phone (and anything else worth more than $20) in the atv cargo bag, or in the truck. Im guessing you will too from now on. The only exception is my holstered weapon. I lose things in the woods. Constantly. My glasses get sweaty and foggy, and I cant see chit. So when the item in question hits the ground, I normally don't notice. Gloves, 25' logging chain, wedges, hammers, files, you name it, I've lost it. You would think a 25' chain is easy to find, right? Wrong. I bought a $100 metal detector just to find it, and still couldn't. This reminds me.....Gonna start a "what have you lost in the woods" thread just for fun
My phone is the one thing I ALWAYS have on me when cutting. Only because if I need to call 911 for myself or whoever I'm cutting with, I don't want to have to run to the truck to grab it.
Agreed its needed for safety. I keep the atv or truck within crawling distance JIC some chit meets the fan.
They work great for me. The only time they leaked is when the saw operator left them dangling when I grabbed the saw to go cut.
