Got a little splittin and stackin done yesterday morning. Just soft maple but I figure iffn it makes smoke, it makes heat too. Got a guard punkin watchin over the stack. I even finally figured out what to do with a rack I been tripping over for 2 years now. Thought it would look good on my splitter shed.
Thanks. I scored a boat load of this maple this summer. This makes about 4 full cords I have split and stacked and I still have about 2 cords worth of logs yet to get done some time. I'm hoping to start mixing it in with my ash, elm and hackberry next year to stretch out the better stuff.
Butcher, that's what I've been doing too. The soft Maple actually works pretty well. I've even used it overnight on a few cold nights. Nice rack, and stacks.
I been splitting this soft maple quite a bit larger than what I usually do with higher btu wood and it seems to even out the average when I mix it in the stove.
I like cutting soft maple. If nothing else, it sure makes some pretty splits. Dries fast and makes good campfire wood, too. Nice rack, by the way. Looks good on the front of that shed.
Lookin' good. It's firewood it'll all burn. I like the "lesser" wood to help burn the harder woods cleaner and better.
Dave, we've had a couple winters where soft maple was probably 90% or more of the wood we used that winter.
I've found it holds a good fire longer than I expected. I still need more, but I've got about 2 full cords for this winter. I'm hoping it allows use of less Oak.
Soft maple kept the house warm last February - wasnt planning to burn it then, but it was dry enough.
Yeah, I don't get why people get all snooty about soft Maple for firewood. I helped my brother work up a Silver Maple a couple years back, kept some of it for myself, I was highly impressed! Like others have said, it really burns nice mixed in with Oak. I would go out on a limb and say I like it almost as much as Ash. And speaking of Oak, I wish I would have had that Maple when I burned the last of a White Oak a couple years back, 3 years CSS, still sizzled/burned so-so, I think the Maple would have helped kick things off
Nice work Butcher - I've burned a cord of soft maple early and a cord late in the season - perfect wood for those times when it's around freezing and above - but will be good for mixing with the better wood too - enjoy! Cheers!
