Hi, after researching we think an Ideal Steel would suit our purposes. However, we are concerned about clearances. I've looked at the Woodstock site and put in an email and catalogue request, but would like additional input. We REALLY REALLY want an ash pan but I'm not sure it will fit. The stove will sit in front of the current fireplace, which has a 28 1/2" height opening. The surround is all metal. There is a shallow tiled hearth. We would like to rear vent and attach to a steel liner in the chimney.Does The ID steel come front the factory with adjustable legs or are they fixed in height at ordering? How will heat shields affect clearances and fit? Here is a pic of where we are planning to put the stove. Thank you for your help. image.jpg

I'm not near my stove to take measurements but- the legs are adjustable, just not easily adjustable. That's why they ask for the height you need and set it up for you. Especially with the ash pan, you need a way to hold it up without crushing the bottom. Without the ash pan I would probably just use a floor jack.
I've had both and I would totally recommend the ash pan if you can swing it.
The rear heat shield sit near flush with the top lip in back so it doesn't get in the way.
Can you extend the non combustible floor and sit the entire stove outside the fireplace? The biggest clearances for the IS are the front floor and sides.

We are planning to set the stove outside the fireplace. The tiles hearth is only 19 1/2" deep, so we probable have set the stove on a hearth pad, thus reducing the height we have available. Not being able to get the ash pan would be disheartening.

Welcome to the forum! I will reach out to you in your inbox. I would be happy to send an electronic copy of the user manual. It fully explains clearances and r-value requirements.

    Welcome to the forum Rdsherman.

The simplest and easiest way to get all questions answered is to call the factory. Do not be afraid they will try to bowl you over because they won't. The people on the phones are there to help and they can help in big ways. They are good people. In addition, it is a toll free call.

I am not sure I understand, if stove sits in front of the hearth and is rear vented the rear vent even with tallest legs is less than 28.. but I will put another vote for just call woodstock. tell them what you got and they will tell you what will work...

According to the website Flue Height to Center (Max Leg Height): 29.5"
And that's to the center... so assuming its 6" pipe than add at least 3" to it, 32.5" tall. Min height 24.5" (+3" = 27.5") so will BARELY fit with single wall pipe if there isn't much rise in the pipe and the stove isn't raised any higher than the existing floor (is the floor r-value atleast .41?). Not sure if the ash pan changes how low it can go.

I don't recall them asking me about leg height, so I'll have to figure that out when I install it. If I have to adjust mine I guess you could just tip it over on its back couldn't you? Meant to get mine installed this past week, but found out Lowe's apparently doesn't sell real bricks anymore:confused:. No clue where to buy bricks.

T-Stew with those clearances I thought you would go with rear vent to chimney liner in hearth.so you could push stove deeper into hearth.

Check TSC. But, I was just in there a couple days ago and they didn't have any winter stuff other than stoves.
Might be a few weeks before that stuff comes out.
Wait, what kind of "real" bricks are you talking about?

The ones that aren’t "patio pavers", I assume they are different? Brick pavers are colored concrete product, and according to the R value sheets concrete is only .095 per inch! Common brick lists at 2.25" = .45 which would suffice the the IS (plus 1/2" mortar too).

Not to mention I'd like it to actually match the brick that's already there. My hearth brick is 2 1/4" thick which seems the norm. All the brick pavers I've seen are like 1 3/4".

    Here is my existing hearth...
