Working on an 009. Spark plug boot has hole with piece of metal showing. Leaking spark past the tape the previous owner used. What are my options? Any band aids for a while? Can you by just a boot, or is the wire part of the coil assembly? This is an eBay saw that should have been sent back due to not as advertised, but it's been way too long to do anything about it. Just want to run it for now, and if I like it maybe fix it better. Clearly the tape wasn't working as evidenced by the spark and the high voltage DC poke I got, lol.
Would this work, I found it on the net. Just cover your existing wire by coating it with heat shrink tubing. You don't even really have to shrink it, but is the first that comes to mind because you can guarantee it will insulate will.
I was able to retape it with better tape. Seems to be working for now, but the whole boot seems kinda loose on the plug. Running good. What do you do when you need a wire or boot on a saw. It seems everything I have seen is one, non-replaceable piece. Coil, wire, and boot all one piece. Am I missing something?
Wire should be able to be replaced? I have length of coil wire? Will ship you a piece that you need ?
The wire is ok I think, but the boot is bad. I was under the assumption that wire and boot were one piece. Does the wire you have include the boot, or is it just wire. Either way I appreciate the generosity Dex.
Crimp. A little sharp tab from the metal terminal that attaches to the plug goes thru the insulation & into the conductor & also crimp to the wire , then the boot slides over that . Pliers should work for the crimp Should be able to find the boot, wire, metal plug connector on line. Seems online most any part is findable Not sure where to search though. Can you make another type of plug boot & wire work? McGuiver time ?
That's probably a spring coil type terminal under the boot. One end of the wire has a 90 in it and is sharpened to a point. No crimping needed. You could replace it with a different type of terminal but often enough the wire is barely long enough to reach so double check before doing any trimming.
I'd put a wrap of 3M rubatex around it and then electrical tape - same issue with my FS353 whacking me when I reached back on the handle a couple years ago. A whole roll is expensive but maybe you know an electrician that can spare 2-3"? - I think a piece will fit in an envelope - PM me Unless you're building a resto piece no sense in going fancy
Either the splicing tape or silicone tape(I can supply both) you have to run a wrap of good electrical tape over the top of each to prevent it from coming loose http://www.grainger.com/product/2A459?cm_sp=HIO-_-HIDP-_-RR_VTV_P&cm_vc=IDPRRZ11 http://www.grainger.com/product/2A460?cm_sp=HIO-_-HIDP-_-RR_VTV_P&cm_vc=IDPRRZ11
Come to think of it I bought a new boot last year for my stihl and I think it was $8 from the dealer. It was cheap I remember thinking I was gonna pay out the butt and how happy I was not too.
