picked up my first firewood yesterday intended for my first season as a wood burner. It's not all pictured here, but about 1.2 cord of kiln dried oak, poplar, and pine. I split an oak block, and it's reading 12-14% on the mm. The guy that sells it cuts up the pallets that would normally just be thrown away at his work, and makes a little $ on the side. Good guy, so glad to do business with him. I figure with the pine and poplar mixed in, would be nice shoulder season stuff. Going through it, it looks like 95% nail-free. It's a start!
I hope this doesn't start a legal measure discussion. Rick, face cord, cord, 128 CF, if a face cord has 16" splits is it still 8' long by 4' high, how much is in a pick-up load (what size pick-up & bed, side boards), etc... I hope I covered them all. That wood looks great and with the two extremes , soft & hard, you should be able to make a mix for any need. I don't know prices in your area but around me $105 for a seasoned cord would be great. Thanks, I didn't think it was too bad of a price either. It usually goes for around $45-$50 a face cord around here, but he said his is lower due to the softer woods mixed in.
Congrats on the first wood! That wood will burn good and hot in your Ideal stove... Are you planning to get more or are you going to cut some yourself also?
Welcome to FHC! Nice first load of wood for your first burn season. Well ahead of the learning curve for first time burners. Congrats!
Thanks everyone for the support! Learned some great things this year on the forum from you all to start this newb out right.
Thanks man! I'm currently processing two downed oak trees at my parents house. I know it won't be dry enough for this year, but that's been an experience! Lol. A lot of firsts for me: first time using a chainsaw, wearing chaps, (easy, the chainsaw ones!!), and first time getting the bar pinched nice and tight in a cut I probably should have made elsewhere! I've made arrangements with a retired fellow down the road to supply me with some more wood for this season, just waiting on him to let me know when.
Thats whats nice about FHC. We were all in your shoes once too and havent forgotten what it was like.
Congrats on getting burnin'! Really like your stove and setup! I just started burning again last year. We of course underestimated what we would burn and ran out of cured wood. We now have have just over 13 cords CSS. plenty ready for this year too. You'll be ahead of the game before you know it!! Nice job!
Good start with some good dry wood, whether you buy your wood or cut your own, no matter no sin from buying wood , just keep collecting it :stacke:
Great start on DRY firewood. Man, go get some more of that primo stuff. Now, pics of fire with that wood is next.........
I've seen that picture before. Don't front any money if you think you are buying that wood. Caution pays.
