Rode bike by a garage sale, & stopped for a look.
    Scored 6 chains
Was asking $10, I offered $5, he said OK

    3/8 x .050 x 72 DL, 20" Stihl RS chains
3 pretty good, 2 are RS3 & one is an RS, need cleaned & sharpened.
1 is an RS skip almost new,
& 2 are RS that are worn down pretty good, I'll throw out.

So for $5, I got 3 good Stihl RS chains. Good buy IMO

I won't use the skip, not sure what to do with it.

The two RS chains that are wore out pretty well, those are great candidates for race chain !!!

Sell it. Then you'll have five free chains.

    Nice score Dave.
There are obviously benefits other than health to riding a bike.

For firewood duty the one semi skip chain won't really notice a difference. I would use it anyway...maybe in questionable wood or somewhere you dont want to possible ruin a better chain.

I run plenty of semi skip...why cause I her them free from folks who dont want to sharpen them anymore

You should definitely give the skip a spin, especially with your softer wood.

I don't notice much SOP difference in cutting speed, but there certainly is a difference in filing time. Especially if you're one that touches up with every tank.

Pretend it's a normal chain, run it, and be pleased with how much faster you can sharpen chain now. :p

Maybe I'll give the skip another try.
When I got the 359 new it had a husqvarna skip.
As I remember when I put on the full comp RS, there was noticeable better performance.
Will try it (skip ) again sometime.

I now have likes 15+ years worth of chains (cutting 8 - 10 cord per year ) :)
Just couldn't pass up the deal for $5.

I use a good not of skip on my saws. Semi skip that is.

Sure its slower than full comp but were not talking so slow you will become annoyed. And out sharpens like 30% faster

I use full skip semi chisel ( Stihl RMF) no issues with it, cuts fine for me.

Where skip chain works shines is with longer bars/bigger wood. It is grabby with limbs/smaller wood. With a standard length bar recommended for a saw, there is enough power there to pull a full comp sharp chain.

I won't use skip chain on anything less than a 25" bar. (With a 17" bar I would forget if it had skip chain on it & use it for limbing by accident. Grabby is not a good thing.)

or like jon 1270 said , sell it/them.

    Actually have 3, 2 husqy & now a stihl .

Prime time summer now, busy time, will worry about it in a couple months.

Rainy day project & it's raining
Cleaned them up a bit in some old 2 cycle gas. Threw one in the trash.
    DSCF5314.JPG

Skip had 24 cutters, 2 links between , full comp has 36 with 1 link between
    DSCF5315.JPG

One was rocked on the right side. , had to file 50% to get it out, measure cutter length & filed them all the same length
    DSCF5317.JPG

2 were pretty much new, but I touched them up with a file,
one of the new ones looks home made, missing a cutter at the splice link
Should be a cutter where the yellow link is
    DSCF5320.JPG

    2 pretty much new, 2 about 1/2
    & a skip.
Left one of the new ones on the saw, sharp & ready to go, the one missing a cutter.
Ready to go. I sprayed with WD , wrapped in a paper towel & put in a zip lock.
Stored with the other chains, got 15+ years worth of chains , cutting, 8 to 9 cord per year.

Wow!!! You filed a chain back 50% by hand!!!! More patience than me!! I would of just got that one xutter close to right and not gone back so far if only one cutter was rocked?
I think some chins that the yellow link falls close there isnt a cutter. I have seen some stihl chain missing a cutter or either have two on the same side near that link.

I dont have chains last that long! But I grind but still. I think oak is just harder on chains than what y'all cut ????

Do y'all not have metal recycle or scrap so that you could put the chain on your metal pile? They pay you for old metal around here. I let it pile up behind the shed till I have a truck and trailer full and sell it. Usually get $100 give or take depending upon what I have .

Wood type definitely effects chain life. I cut green & clean wood, that helps too.

    No steel recycle,
    Aluminium & copper.

Any loop with a link count that doesn't divide by 4 evenly will have an anomaly in the pattern.

Looks like 2 or 3 of the chains can be square filed. Great for clean wood!

Not sure what you mean ?
2 of the chains didn't have a cutter missing. (the skip was missing a lot :) )
The RS I bought from the Stihl shop a few years ago didn't skimp on a cutter.
All the 72 LGX & LPX I have , have all 36 cutters.

    Not seeing the logic ?
Pic = Both Stihl RS, 3/8, .050, 72 DL.: Top one is the one missing a cutter (only has 35) .. bottom one has all 36 cutters :
    DSCF5336.JPG

Stihl web site has a cutter on the yellow link, why not this chain ? ? :

    sthl RS.jpg

all the teeth on the right side were rocked, that was the worst
+ retired guys have more time & less money, need to save $$ when we can. :D LOL
