So we went camping for a week at a state campground in CT and decided not to bring my own wood since you aren't supposed to move firewood. I bought some at the camp store and was sorry I did. The tag said it was seasoned hardwood but instead we got wet pine for the equivalent of 850 a cord and it produced more smoke than flame. Needless to say, next time I'm supplying my own firewood next time.
Campground purchased firewood is always very expensive. More often than not it's extremely dry and burns up quickly. I've often wondered if they don't add a chemical to make it burn faster. The idea being that you'll purchase more wood for the ability to have a campfire.
I know, but I do and I was pizzed with what I got. My wife grabbed a couple of bundles while I was cooking and she has no clue. The stuff was so wet it wouldn't even burn.
I brought some of my own when we went camping a few weeks ago - although the campsite we were at was less than 5 miles from my house. I didn't like the idea of moving firewood either, but who knows where the wood in the bundles they were selling comes from? There's a local tree service that supplies a couple of the campgrounds around here, so who knows how far away the wood came from. It certainly wasn't "kiln dried" or "treated" in any way. We watched a few other campers struggling with keeping it lit, and then struggling to breathe through all the smoke once they finally got it going.
Not being able to transport wood is a bummer for sure.....leaves you at someone elses mercy for decent wood....when you know that you can have good stuff to burn if brought from home. Been there.
i was told you can bring klin dryed wood to camp sites i use klin dryed hard woods i get from a funiture manufacture for free
Had to laugh. Set the wife up at the campground then went to work. Came back at midnight and my wife was snickering. Couple next to her was trying to get their fire going. Mama bear decided to get hers going. Took some of my CSS dry wood and a wax egg carton fire starter and poof fire. Couple next to her smouldering n smoking for another 10 minutes then hears the wife say-why won't ours start like hers. Hubby replies I don't know. Wife said maybe she knows what she is doing. Hubby said well this is a family site so you imagine and it wasn't nice. Mama Bear couldn't wait to tell me when I got back.
We live and we learn. But I would agree, take your own wood unless you know of a dependable source. In Maine, it is illegal to carry word across the state line. Not usually a problem around these parts.
Husband had some fool come up to house to borrow some power tools. He was installing feet on poplar cuts to support a platform bed lattice. He argued with me that it was hardwood. Ummm, the type he had BOUGHT was quite soft.
As long as I am NOT going out of the state I don't give a crap, I have taken camping wood to the site several times so what is the big deal?
Things became very serious in the rocky mountains with pine beetle spreading. It spread all by itself without the help of campers transporting firewood. I watched the forests die from 100 miles away to my area.
