http://desmoines.craigslist.org/zip/5135867065.html Its White Oak Seen this ad on local CL last night around 6PM.Pretty much stuffed to the gills in my cramped small backyard storage/processing area & am pretty busy at work/too tired to do much after getting home in afternoon. Plus have some cleanup to finish at parents acreage after dropping that large ugly old Red Oak & a slightly smaller one about 2 weeks back.... But coming home from work today I remembered that street address in ad,but not the actual house number.Thought hey why not,its on the same route you normally take anyway.... So there was not quite a pickup load left on the curb.Pretty much filled my 6.5 foot box w/ topper anyway.Counting a few small limbs, some splitter scrap. The big rounds were 12 to 17" or so diameter.I keep a couple of old 6 foot 2 x 12's in the truck at all times just for rolling/pushing heavy stuff up into the bed.Saves on the back for sure.....
LOL just noticed that the ad is still up,even though I took all that was left on Thursday afternoon....There's a for sale sign in the front yard though,so probably the realtor or owner hasn't been by lately to check.
Last Tuesday my "new" Homie Super 1130G Gear Drive arrived,so I just had to try it out after work. Sure it was overkill using that 44" bar/1/2" pitch chain on a couple of the biggest rounds (16"-17") but it was lots of fun!! Wednesday after work I used the 2100CD with 24" bar to rip the remaining big ones in half.A few knots & tight curly grain judging by the bark, the X27 & normally excellent Husky 7lb splitting axe just bounced off a couple. See that nice curl? Was originally all gonna be winter fuel for 2-3 years down the road, but now I have other ideas for some of the nicer pieces that will be milled & dried.Like jewelry boxes, small art objects, small bowls, other domestic articles etc.... First piece is 2.25 x 6 x 17 inches,quartersawn/edge grain.
Nice figuring on several of those splits! Love that stuff! Getting those angles right when sawing the finished lumber will be important. Don't stain them, just my opinion.... We will need pics of the finished pieces those will make.... Very nice find for sure.
Yup I hear ya. If memory is correct I can count the number of pieces I've stained on 5 fingers in over 30 years.Main thing was a White Oak tool chest made in 2o05 from 30 yr old resawn local 2.5" & 3" thick bridge planks.Wanted it to look 100 yrs old the day it was finished, and I eventually succeeded. Everything other project whether small or large gets either a clear oil/hand rubbed wax or a varnish/lacquer finish depending on its intended use.
