Is it near time for "Lake Effect" snow storms?

Lake Erie does freeze. I will try to remember to take a picture of it this year. Once the Lake freezes it does change the effect of the Northern Winds but the storms still come. The Lake Effect occurs all year. I can get summer storms from Cleveland or Erie depending on the wind direction. On top of that, if the storms from the Ohio Valley move north, then we get dumped on by those too.

Bogydave - yes, parts of the NWPA state get 100+ inches annually. That chart is correct.

There are 2 1/2 ski resorts in the Erie/Jamestown area - Edinboro, Peek'n Peak, and Holiday Valley. Edinboro isn't a resort but it does have slopes.

 

One more thing, The lake also has a microclimate effect. The Eastern Great Lake region is either the 2nd or 3rd largest grape growing region in the US.

That much snow it great for winter sports.
Not so good for commerce,
but the snow plow guys call it "pennies from heaven "

 

The rest of the country gets a break. It has been either snowing or sleeting here since Friday night. This one reason I get a little nutty.

I heard a rumor of Lake Michigan freezing across in the 1930's. It was said that some cars crossed it on the ice. True or fiction? IDK.

Kind of an old thread now, but this is the heaviest lake effect snow I've seen yet this season. We've gotten a couple inches of snow in the last hour.

Pic is of my Bradford pear tree on the side of my driveway that hadn't shed all its leaves yet and is coated with ice. The snow is coming straight down and sitting on the branches that are still covered in ice. The pic doesn't do justice to how hard it was snowing when I took the picture.

Sounds like we might get 4-6 inches tonight depending on where the lake effect bands set up. Theres a 'meso low' sitting offshore of Muskegon now that is inching its way towards my area.

Gonna be fun running the snowblower down the ice covered driveway tomorrow.
