Coming back from the tree dump I saw a guy walking down the street with an AR rifle strapped to his chest. From his pace and manner I figured he was just doing an open carry demonstration (in rural, farming, pheasant hunting Iowa....really?) but with the nuts out there I decided to ask if that was the case. I turned around the block and caught up to him just as he crossed the street. I turned onto the side street, rolled my window done and very politely asked "Excuse me sir"....he kept walking and I said it again just as politely. Without seeing who I was he turned, flipped me off and said "F... you" then kept walking. I did call the police and let them know, and told them I didn't feel threatened but where he was. The dispatcher asked me about his reaction and confirmed he was just demonstrating his right. I'm all for owning guns....open carry is not an issue with me...concealed weapons is not an issue with me, but why would you be such a complete moron to someone who was being respectful? What good does coming off like an SOB do for our rights of owning a gun? I'm not trying to start a debate on guns....that's too close to politics for me...just venting about some idiot doing more harm than good. Arrrrg!
That's not a demonstration, its full blown stoopid. I'm all for oc, or cc, but those types of idiots make us all look bad.
In these days and times, I would be awfully careful confronting anyone in a situation like that. Respectful as you were being, you never know when someone is on the verge of being this afternoon's headline maker. Just sayin........................
I thought of that...but figured I'd rather confront him than have him walk into some store and unload on a bunch of women and kids. But I really didnt think that was too probable from his mannerisms.
I'm pro-gun rights......but anti-idiots rights! We need to have some common ground to keep guns out of the hands of total idiots like this guy!
What do you think you could have done if he was trouble? Become a victim? You mentioned "with all the nuts out there". If I had read concerns, I would call the police and NOT confront the person. Odd acting with a gun, Stay away! Alert those who can deal with it. Sorry, but dead, you won't be any good to your family.
I didnt feel he was breaking the law so I didn't feel calling police right away was the right thing to do.
just because you can do something doesnt mean you have to do it , the only reason to do this kind of thing is for attention and in my opinion makes responsible gun owners look bad , if you need to oc a holstered handgun should be fine, im glad nothing happened when you approached this idiot.
Open carry on school grounds was the popular thing to do here in Michigan earlier this year, just because it was legal. Smart? Mmmmmm, prolly not. It raised a pretty big stink, but I honestly don't pay much attention. Don't know where that situation is at now.
The person who confronted him before you was prolly an anti-gun tree huggin nut with a sierra club bumper sticker and Obumble 2016 T-shirt.
There is a big difference between carrying a holstered handgun like any LEO does and strapping an AR to your chest and going for a stroll just because you can. Then to be rude on top of that? That's a special kind of ignorant.
I sometimes will leave my house to shoot woodchucks. I always felt awkward with a .222 slung over my shoulder as I walked down the road to get to the fields I was going to hunt. Now, the gun was unloaded, I'm well known in my neighborhood and I think respected-I'm a school principal-but I still felt strange.
To my eye you would look like any other hunter carrying a weapon. Be it a bow, rifle, shotgun, etc. It would look a little strange if you carried it into the local dollar store however.
Probably not a huge chance of that in this corner of the state. Rarely is there a Democrat even running for office.
