I took the day off today to get some work done outside. The forecast earlier this week looked great for firewood. This morning they had it raining all weekend. Bought the ticket, take the ride. I got most of my lawn done this morning before the rain. There was a chance of thunder showers to the south, but it was just drizzling here, so I decided to play in the woods first. I walked my red pine stand marking dead trees and inspecting others for beetle damage. Most of the ones with holes in them were in the messier areas with lots of knocked over rotten trees. I think I'm going to have to "transplant" all that rotten wood somewhere further away from this stand of trees. Since I'm working on my shoulder wood, figured I'd make a sweep for firewood first. I cut down a couple leaners, which were all rotten, and one on the ground that looked ok but ended up being rotten too. I found one smaller standing one that was still decent and loaded that up. 4 8' logs, between 10-14" diameter. Didnt get any pics of those - whole anyway... The rain let up this afternoon, so I switched gears to stacking and splitting. My girlfriend helped me stack up the last of the maple, and she's starting to get pretty good at it! :stacke: One more spot left to fill behind the garage - looks like it will probably be a hardwood variety pack. There's a few smaller ash, elm, and maple that will probably get stacked there when I get through the pine. Made a serious dent in that - loaded the trailer up with rounds after stacking the maple, and got all of that split. She helped me with that too, she was setting me up so i could spend more time swingin'. I guesstimate around a cord waiting to be stacked now. 2 rows down, one to go. Working on a new stacking spot in the back yard for the shoulder wood. I had a few PT 4x4 and 2x6 on hand, and some other 2x4 scraps, that I'm going to make into an 8'x6' pallet. I think I'm going to mill a little more 2x decking out of the last pine log I have up at the house too.
Nice work Shawn Curry-It has rained, and flooded here more than it has in 40 yrs-I have it better than most but have had my share of trouble---early summer it went 17 days without rain, today was our first day without in 22, and I mean tropical, sideways downpours and the tail-end of a derecho...enough is enough
We were actually in a drought through May - the town even had a burn ban. We're definitely above normal for June and July, but the ground has been taking it because the water table is so low. So I guess we needed it here, but its just been really lousy timing for it - we'll have a couple beautiful days during the week, then its rains all weekend. I guess if its gotta be humid, a little bit of rain isn't so bad to work in.
Same thing here. My lawn looked like a desert by late May but now it's like the amazon..haha.. Supposed to be really hot here the next few days but we're heading north tomorrow morning. First stop is good old North East for the day then it's off to St Ignace Michigan for 5 days.. Supposed to be mid 70's and sunny the entire time up there!
nice job on the stacks we could use some of that rain out west, we are so dry and hot it is ridiculous. heck the salmon are dying in the mouths of the rivers, they are tying to get up the rivers to spawn but the rivers are low and water is too hot and depleting oxygen levels
Never forget to take along some warm clothing when heading to northern MI. Chance are, you'll need it. I've seen many, many days in St Ignance with high temperatures of low 50's. Yes, be sure to pack some warm clothing and have fun! Be sure, if the weather is good to take in the beach 20 miles west of town.

We got a break from the rain yesterday afternoon through this morning. Didnt get a break from the heat though unfortunately. I don't mind it though - my tan needs some work too. It was a little cooler in the shade so I got some work done in the woods yesterday. Couple of smaller windfall black locust that I needed to move out of the way to get at some big dead elm that I plan to share with my BIL. Finished up the lawn this morning, then I milled the decking boards for my pallet. And the rest is going to end up as the firewood stacked on top of it. Firewood poetry in motion, if I do say so myself.
Managed to get everything looking more "finished up" before the rain. Remaining red pine rounds split up, trailer unloaded and larger pieces cut to rounds. Time for a shower!
Looks Great! Glad you got it all in before it rained...... It literally poured again here last night and today and I'm talking flash flooding and rain coming down sideways can't see to drive rain. This summer has been miserable.
