    I set up an inspection for a reverse mortgage for her. She refused to let them in. She is very sharp for her old age, and knows it would be condemned if inspected. When I was there is was not so bad. Flash forward, 8 years later when my husband visited he informed me of the mushroom in the spare bedroom and termited in front deck.

    There is a mobile home here in town for a reasonable price. I will look at it tomorrow. Yikes!

    Had to go back and catch up on this thread. You and your husband are 2 of the reasons this FHC forum is so uplifting and unique on the internet. Good of you to try and do what you could and, I hope her daughter can continue to help too. Taking care of older family members can be quite a challenge, even under the best of circumstances.

    We can see it coming. Our parents are gone, several care issues while they declined. We are hoping splitting this place into a duplex is our ticket to being able to live out our lives here. It was the son's suggestion after having discussed it with his brother and two sisters. We were the last to hear about it. It has cost a huge hunk of money to do this conversion but the results is quality of life. I am hoping the dust will settle before long and everyone will be in there space.

    I think your planning ahead is the best possible circumstance Larry. It does take a lot... of everything... to make it all happen. Your son (and his family) taking this head on is a huge deal and a very good thing. Also good that his brother and sisters are supportive too... doesn't always turn out that way sometimes. Looking forward to seeing the new apartment all done and you and Cindy enjoying it... :yes:

    Wildwest, obviously your concerns are for her health and safety! Mold like your describing is dangerous for all especially the elderly.. from what you said the best alternative, is to tear old house down and donate to charity and put cheap trailer on her lot.. then she still has her independence while she can handle it. Habitat for humanity up here will help with deconstruction with high school kids in trade classes.. look into it. I know she is stubborn but she wants her independence if you can offer her that she might be more flexible on the house..

    I can see myself acting the same way if and when I reach her age and I hope that my relatives respect my wishes, for their sake anyway.

    Gal canceled to see trailer but said I could drive by. Trailer park not bad, trailer old and ugly. The "updated" windows did not appear to be installed correctly, and the tell tale shrink wrap on the inside said a lot to me. Oh well.
