Did you at least do it with a freshly sharpened chain? That is usually my luck in the first cut with a sharp one.

Looks like a Stihl hit it. A Husky would have gone through the whole thing before you noticed :D

That does stink though, is the chain salvageable?

The chain was sharpened a few weeks ago, other then that it was a new chain.

It sucks and I am always furious with myself after doing something like that. Sorry about the chain.

I'd be curious Uni, what sorta things we all have driven our saws into... other than wood. Dirt seems to be my favorite... nuthin like a rooster tail of dirt to let me know that chain's about done...... ;)

Always better to hit steel than your leg. Hopefully the chain is salvageable.

When we lived in Northern California, my deaf neighbor had a huge Ponderosa Pine come down during a big winter soaker. The tree just barely clipped the corner of his garage as it fell forward towards the street. This tree was greater than 3 feet diameter at 8 feet up on the trunk.
I took over on the limbing and bucking where his Poulan Woodshark left off. I was finally into the trunk section with my 288XP and a 36" bar when my neighbor was moving the towable splitter into where I was cutting. He rolled the splitter back right into the tip of my bar whilst I was mod cut. Needless to say it quickly parted my 115dl chain(new), and sent it all flying rearward towards me.

It's always a new chain too... :picard::doh: It's even more aggravating when you knew it was there, and hit it anyway. There's some metal in the trunk of the old walnut I'm milling at my sister's place. The first cuts I'm planning to make will be with a 50" bar and a brand new 156DL chain. Wish me luck! :)

Chit happens. You didn't get hurt and the chain can be replaced, life goes on. On the bright side of things, I bet it will be a while before that happens again!

Yep. The trunk has at an angle, and I was on the backside of it. I believe his being deaf is what caused him to not realize my proximity. He felt bad, and offered to pay for the repair, or a new chain. I told him not to worry about it.

Still not sure exactly how I did it but I was tuning a saw in the pole barn, was not looking at the end of the bar, anyway, end of chain ended up cutting into a bag of blast media:hair:
What a mess :picard:had to take everything apart and clean it thoroughly:headbang:
