bought wood today. Before you go revoking my FHC membership, hear me out. It was 5 miles from my house, way dry and $75/cord. Given that my wife has been hitting the primo stash when I'm away to keep the house warm (another topic entirely), this seemed like money well spent.

heard ya Zap, that was my rationalization for this one because it sure didn't feel right. On the plus side, hauling/handling dry wood is a pleasure compared to the fresh loads I've been hauling back through the hills from the farm the past couple months.

When you get a deal like that and you need it I say go for it. If I could find some good dry wood like that right now I would jump all over it heck if I could find it on the regular I might be willing to lay off of the scrounging for a bit.

    Dry & $75 per cord,
Tough to get green wood & dry it for 2 years at the price.
Dry wood is key, means it's usable now, & winter has hit your area harder than "the Norm"

You just need a bigger stack of "Primo wood"
Guessing that's what this load is for . ? ?

    Wood type ?

How did you find the wood under all the reported snow your area has been getting, ?
I bet some snow removal was required :)

Nice load on the mule & wagon

    Good deal!

My wife prefers I buy our firewood now. She knows every time I buy its less chance of another herniated disc or another MI. Life catches up to us at different rates and my family genes are not good in the heart disease and back trouble departments.

I just look long and hard for good deals and fortunately have found a few.

Agreed. Even buying it, it's far cheaper around here than natural gas and far far cheaper than electric and heating oil.

Quite a bit of ironwood, some sugar maple, ash, birch and a bunch of stuff without any bark that I couldn't identify. The guy just bought the house and wanted it gone. It was pretty funny that all loaded up the truck laughed at it compared to the 2 cord loads of Sugar Maple its been pulling out of the woods and hauling home through the hills.

you guys would laugh if you saw it...def all small diameter stuff 4-way max and looks like a guy with a homeowner saw cut it...lengths ranged from 10" to 24" with the whole range well represented. but it is bone dry.

Pretty sure mine does too but she won't admit it. A Saturday trip to the farm to cut often results in a weekend spent at the farm:drunk:

75 bucks a cord and my saws would disappear! Nothing wrong with that!

Pfft my stuff is all different sizes two due to scrounging solar! That's a great find and you have that much more wood to add to your FHC badge. Nothing wrong with buying I'm just to stubborn to myself.

Heck for $75/cord I'd grab all I could find room for.....Costs me roughly $80/cord when cutting snags/deadfall,doing timber stand improvement etc.on parents 10 acres. That's 2 hours round trip travel,gas,wear/tear on truck & equipment, not counting my time spent cutting, which can obviously vary depending on how big the trees are,how difficult, location, steep terrain, any rigging set up needed etc.But its well worth, better than any gym membership, even though its slowly wearing me down as I get older now.But patience & knowing my physical limits are the key.Havent lost my passion for working in the woods yet, probably wont long as I can still breathe.

I like working in the woods. Great excuse to hang out with friends, find better ways to get things done and drink really good beer. The quality of my stock is going to be amazing in a few years compared to my scrounging days.
