I've hit pay dirt down by the river by my house! There was a tree company using this lot for log storage, and I noticed they pulled all their trucks and equipment outta there. I went down and saw the owners, and they said take whatever you want. I made sure to tell him that I would be operating a chainsaw down there. He asked me to cut him a pile in return, so happy days! I've been eyeballing this pile for a long time too, a lot of the wood has been down there over a year and appears to be seasoned. I saw black locust, oak, and a lot of maple. Some is already bucked. Time to fill the gas can and sharpen the saw... There are two separate piles of logs, the bigger pile goes back a lot farther than it looks. If I had to guess, I would say there is 10-12 cord all together, some of the pieces are 3-4' diameter.
Good score, looks like a lot of good wood there. But don't kid yourself, it'll need to be split and dried. No way it will be 'seasoned,' although some of the dead ones may be well on their way...
I hear ya.. This wood most likely will be next years supply anyway. I just gotta find the motivation in this humidity to get at it..
There's one more issue... A hornets nest that chased me outta there.. It's the size of a honey dew Mellon, and it's watching over the whole stack. I'm going there with a couple cans of that hornet killer, I'll try and take a video of that.. Should be entertaining
Screw that hornet spray, toss a coffee can worth of gas on that sucker after dusk and you'll be good to go! Nice score btw!
Looks like you hit the jackpot! That's a good score, right there. Unless, of course, the hornets sting you to death.
If you decide to use gas, just make sure you're ready to put your firewood out! Although, sawing up a log that's on fire is quite the experience! Looks like a 2-3 year plan sitting right there! You have a cant hook yet? You'll want to bring one of those...
What a jealousy-worthy stash to happen upon! Except for those danged hornets- kill them... Kill them with the fire!
That's a nice looking pile of wood, hornets or not. Will it season sooner since its been cut and sitting for awhile compared to cutting a live tree.
Looks like easy pickins. Great find. About the hornets, just remember that they are a lot like commies, just as scared of you as you are of them. Starting fluid and a Zippo lighter knocks them down pretty good.
A hoarder trait, keeping an eye on the future logs. Good going, looks like you may have a decent amount there.
Ok, I went back over there with my mighty Stihl 009l, and armed with 4 cans of wasp and hornet killer. I approched the nest with a can in each hand. There was very little activity, so I raised the two cans up and commenced sprayage.. Dousing the nest and trying to kill any that tried to escape. Ran back to my truck that was running very close by to wait it out. I saw a few swarming around it, so I got out and continued to spray relentlessly.. And in the end, I think I got them all.. Now on to the important stuff, first I cut up a 6' black locust log that was right at the tailgate of my truck. That stuff is hard as nails and heavy as all heck fire. Got that loaded and found a relatively straight length of maple I believe ,sitting on top of some other logs . I used a cable to drag it to the ground so it would be easier to buck. Got that cut and loaded, and moved on to a short piece of red oak that was right at my feet. Cut that and loaded. Truck squatting pretty good, so o decided to take a closer look at what was there. Under a bunch of logs I found some pretty looking beech logs, they're gonna be real tough to get to, but I'm gonna give it hell. There's a ton of Maple, oak, and black locust, some sycamore, and some others I can't ID. My BIL is coming Monday with his bigger saw, so we'lol hopefully put a bigger dent in this pile than I did today. In the picture with my truck, if you look behind it, that's the pile of logs..
