Sam Adams summer has been out for a little while now. It's a seasonal beer and my favorite of all the seasonals. I had a couple last night at dinner.

So I was in the grocery store with my wife Friday and saw "Not Your Father's Root Beer" and picked up a six pack. While my wife was trying to tell me that root beer doesn't contain alcohol (this one does @ 5.9% ABV) 2 other shoppers overhead our conversation and stopped to tell me how delicious it is. Then at the checkout the clerk asked me if I had it, and he, the bag boy, and the clerk in the next lane had a conversation about how good it is and how they can't keep it in stock. Later that evening we were out at dinner and when I asked for a beer list the waiter told me they just got Not Your Father's Root Beer in stock and I should try it, but since I already had it at home I went with something else. Regardless, I was pretty stoked to sit down and drink a bottle last night since 6 separate people had told me how great it was in the past day!

Well, it does taste exactly like root beer, and I typically like root beer, but this has an overpowering vanilla taste. And by the end of the bottle I was getting a hint of a nyquil/black licorice aftertaste. I reckon I'll just give away the remaining 5 to people who come over and want to try it, because this certainly isn't for me. It's certainly not a beer (even though it says it's an ale). But if you really like root beer it might be worth a try for the novelty of it.

I tried it for the first time. Just took a sip because the sweet stuff usually isn't for me. I thought it wasn't very good, but It is certainly targeted for the non-beer drinkers.

Speaking on non-beers, my sister had a Shipyard Melonhead... gross. I find many of their beers on the sweet side - pumpkinhead and the gingerbread ones stand out. I have taken a sip of each and that's as far as it goes.

I really like German beers but oddly enough I had never had St. Pauli Girl until last night. Pretty darn good stuff.

If I'm not drinking beer, I sip whiskey in the winter and gin and tonic in the summer...or something with tequila in it. I learned long ago to not even try the trendy stuff.

Same here. My wife loved it, but I prefer a nice hoppy IPA. It was too sweet for me.

I had one last week.. It does taste like root beer, but one is all I can take...

As for Summer Shandy? I have been on a binge of them lately. I hated it last year, but I had one at a concert last month and I guess my taste has changed :) :drunk:
