So...I don't have CAD yet bit I'm wondering if I should mod the muffler on my 361. She's a screamer now but I have plenty more adjustment in the H screw to put more fuel to it...just need more air. I modded my BILs 310 and woke it up pretty good. What can I expect on a 361?
You can get 10% easy. Nothing in the muffler to mod, and they are crimped. I would recommend the shark gill mod that I did on one of my 361s. I added a screen and Husky baffle over it to direct the flow outward. Here is the inside of a stock 361 muffler (courtesy of "Lakeside" Andy in WA state): 361 shark gill mod:
Also pull the limiter caps and trim the tabs off on a stock 361 and put them back in, even if you do not modify it. The H screw is right on the edge of too lean from the factory when it is maxed out. I find that they need about 1/16 of a turn more to be tuned right.
Caps are already trimmed and reinstalled. It looks like a couple slits 1.5" long cut with a die grinder pried open about 1/16" with a screwdriver. Sound about right?
Yep. I used a Dremel with a metal cutting wheel to make the three vertical cuts, and a flat screwdriver to ease them open. The other most common mod on this saw muffler that I have seen are ovals drilled into the same area with a brazed tube coming out at an angle, but that's a lot more work for the same result. Wojo sells mufflers modified like that on Ebay for $125. Three slits cut with a Dremel cost... nothing? I added a screen and baffle because of the fire control laws here.
The "Gills" is prob the easiest and cheapest method. The one I'd personally go with. And if you love your 361 already, get ready to fall in love all over again Muff mod it, or just send it to Mastermind? That's part of the package
He sure does make sure you get your money's worth. Does a ton of work for what he charges. I think all of the builders are in the same neighborhood on price. After running a few of those ported saws last weekend, I can see how it gets addicting!
I wish. Maybe someday...but it will probably be a 440. My favorite uncle is about to downsize his minty 440 and in no uncertain terms I told him I want it. I think it should have as much snort as it does sentimental value....and that is a lot.
440 only needs a factory CDN 460 Magnum dual port muffler cover to run with a stock 372 or 460. With a full port job it will smoke a 372 or a 460. But I paid less for my 044 than a port job would cost though, even with the CDN cover. Running the 044 I get a lot more tired than using a 361 though, so I do not use it that much.
