A belated b-day present from my Dad, this Dewalt driver drill/impact set is just what I was drooling over for the past year. I have an old 18V XRP (doesn't everyone?) but only 1 good battery for it now. DCK281D2 - 20V Brushless drill impact set. DCD790 Drill and the DCF886 impact. I have the DCD790 at work and I love this little drill. Light and balanced, great ergos, and more than enough power for what I do. If I'm going to load up a 4" hole saw, I'm going corded anyways.
The run time out of the little 2.0aH batteries and brushless motors is incredible. I can't wait to get 'em to buy something with the 4.0aH packs. My supervisor is not a fan of cordless tools outside of the drill/drivers. Hates charging batteries, wearing them out, dead batts in the case with the tool, etc. the newer lithium stuff might just make a believer out of him. To borrow a phrase from one of my favorite you tubers.... These things are "Super Skookum!"
Nice set there! I replace my old Dewalt 18v XRP with a Bosch lithium set. It's made a believer out of me of cordless tools! It's so much smaller than the old NiCad drills and batteries, but just as powerful. I use the impact just about every weekend either working on the house or on the vehicles or other equipment. I recently picked up a cordless circular saw which sees a lot of use, and am on the lookout for a reciprocating saw too.
I have some trigger time with the Bosch stuff too as we have some of it at work also. They are nice little drills and have lasted a lot longer than I thought they would initially.
I've got all the Dewalt 20v stuff. I'm on the second 3/8 driver. I use them all day. Just ordered the greasegun because the charger finally died. Figured we could use a second gun in the shop and can always use another battery. I wish they made a 20 v boroscope though. Doggy
Let me know what you think of that grease gun. Love the battery guns for their portability but hated that the best guns were stuck in 1997 battery technology hell.
Is anyone having trouble with the lithium batteries overheating? My porter cable gets hot running the 3/8 impact.
I've seen them get a tad warm when running a tool hard, especially the smaller packs. But not to the point of feeling "wrong" or tripping any thermal overloads. But none of my stuff is PC, home or work tools.
I have a 20v Dewalt impact. Love it. Not a fan of the drill though. Chuck is not true and larger bits wobble.
Which drill? The brushless one like I have here (DCD790) has a better chuck than the others. I really didn't care for the plastic coated ones. Now you have me wanting to check both of these little drills tomorrow..... lol.
Thanks! Yeah, the metal chuck is a big reason why I like the 790. Us mechanics aren't real kind to the plastic parts on our tools!
I feel your pain! Dad actually bought me the set with the DCD780 and the non-brushless impact. Since I had b-day bucks I had been saving towards these tools, I bought the bit kit and upgraded to the brushless tools. Happy happy! That's one of the times I'm glad Lowes takes returns without a receipt.
You know you can replace the battery cells in the xrp sets? They are just a series of rechargeable C batteries. Open up the case with a torx ( I think) and you will see the individual batteries. I have the Lithium set and hate the drill. The chuck is too heavy for the abrupt stopping power and high speed rotation. This causes the hand chuck to unwind and the bit drops out unexpectedly. Not a big deal if you are using an 1/8 bit, but the larger stuff will damage whatever it lands on. BTW, I am a firm believer that the impact driver has changed the world.
I have noticed the drill stops very abruptly when the gearbox is in high speed. Not a show stopper for me I guess as I'm primarily a mechanic and my drills are seldom in high speed! The impact driver gets used at every single opportunity. As for the XRP batteries, thanks for the tip! I think with a couple beans leftover in the tool budget, I might treat the old girl to a Lithium pack as I'm pretty sure they made them to fit the XRP tools.
we just bought the Dewalt 20V sawzall at work and an extra battery. Now that they took the inertial plunge on 20V I hope to see more items as well. We have been strictly pneumatic forever, with the exception of a few electric tools ( sawzall, circular saw with metal cutting blades) we had to go out and about and make some mods on some equip so I suggested a cordless 20v sawzall, even though they just bought us a corded Milwaukee one for in the shop
Same with me, changed out my old NiCad with a Bosch impact and drill using lithium batts, no looking back now.
