I've got me some big fat ground hogs that I want to take care of. They live under my shed and now are starting to dig under my wood stacks. I know this will be constant battle, since they fill vacancies so well...They are hard to Live trap. Only catch the juvenile's. My air gun has its limitations.... Any ideas?
Yes.... But it's a bit noisy... Timing has to be right. Different shells I've heard make them more "quite"...
.22 shorts will work. Try using apples for bait in the traps. Could use 220 conibears if dogs and cat aren't around a lot. When I use them I make a mesh "cage" around them sometimes to keep other animals out.
I'll loan ya this guy after he shreds my chipmunks! More seriously...look up a conibear trap, the hawgs don't stand a chance with one of those over an active hole
What size of conibear does one recommend? Can I set that up at the entrance of them going in under the shed?
I use a 220 mostly, I think a 160 will work also depending on size of hog. I set them right at the entrance. I usually bend the trigger wire down and out some.
Well Momma or Daddy which ever it is, is a biggin'. Probably easily 2 ft long or longer and 30-40 lbs ....
I'd go 220 than. You can get them all over the place online. If you have Gander Mtns out there close they may have them, but a little pricey IMHO.
I like .22 subsonics. They're normally a little more accurate than a .22 short if you need to take longer shots. If you try to shoot them be warned, groundhogs are tough if it's just a .22 hitting them! I don't like taking shots anymore unless I can hit them in the head. I've half paralyzed a couple and watched them drag themselves into their holes before I could get a 2nd shot in them.
Aguila SSS. 60 gr. .22lr @ sub-sonic velocity. They're a bit louder than my pellet rifle, but not atrocious. Loud in a pistol, not so much in a rifle. They'll do the job.
Suppressed 22lr. just have to wait 6-7 MO the for the suppressor like I'm doing right now. 22 subsonic or the 22CB might do it at short distances.
I've killed a lot of them with cci stingers up to 100 yards. It won't be quiet with those is the only problem.
.22 subs and some patience. Just be aware of what's behind your target of course. They can still travel quite a bit. No need for me to be quiet out here so I sit in my shop with the window cracked, scoped m&p 22 on the sill. Fat little whistle pigs pop their heads out of the hole and it's lights out.
