Same here...you could do about whatever you wanted in the old stoves short of burning your old socks or tires. o_O

So that's where my socks were going.

Glad to here you're getting it lined out. Its much better to start cutting the air a little early with tube stoves. Once they get going they can kind of have a mind of their own.

Used to burn lots of garbage paper & junk mail in the old stove.
Wouldn't go back now that I've experienced dry wood & the catalytic.
More & cleaner heat from a lot less wood. (Near 40% less wood)
( & a warmer house but some energy upgrades at the same time as the new stove)

Learning curve for me is ongoing. Just more little tweaks than home run swings now.

Loaded the stove up, Started dialing down sooner and Leveled off cruising at 650 ST, No blower needed

biggest thing to remember , the "new load" will outgas at its highest level within about 15-20 minutes after a hot reload, +700F jumps aren't the greatest thing for a steel stove, certainly not for cast. if the reload is jumping you up that high, postpone reloading until the coals are a little less active so there's not as much thermal energy present to outgas so heavily, should slow the reload "bump" and the following load may last a bit longer

It's a reply to the "cat or tube" question (and it was my first post). :(

    Thanks.
The Endeavor was in the house we bought 5 years ago. I really like it, now I'm used to it. It takes some tending to in the first 20 minutes or so (intake adjustment, bypass) so it doesn't take off, but once heated up it burns clean and long. I get a good 8 hour burn once hot. It can eat some wood if the fire runs away. I burn ponderosa pine mostly, with some hard cedar, doug fir, and aspen on occassion. Par for northern New Mexico.
I agree with comments in other threads that the Endeavor probably won't give a 10-12 hr. burn w/o a reload, nor will it adequetly heat a large, multistory house in bitter cold. But I like mine.

Well shoot, I can see why you're only getting 8 hr burns, with the wood have, but you gotta burn what you got! my house is 1250 square feet and with temperatures around 20 to 35 I have been loading twice a day 12 hour burns in my stove, been burning mostly a mix of oak ash and sugar maple.
I like the lopi stoves for their heavy duty simplicity and close clearances.
I see the endeavor is the same size firebox as my stove just has a bypass

I have not read every word of this thread, but as many of you know I have and old Buck and have had it for many years. In 2011 i got my littl EPA Hampton. At first I had similar experiences and was really not liking it to much. It seemed hard to control. Fast forward to 2015.....I love my little Hampton. I have figured it out and it is as predictable as can be. Bottom line is, don't give up, keep experimenting and you will figure it out.

For the record, I still love my Buck !

I got the stove under control now never underestimate the leaks you may have around your door gasket

Ok, wait... its a newer EPA stove, with tubes (no cat) and no bypass? you're getting 700+ degree temps on the stove top itself?
