I'm kind of overwhelmed with things going on this year, but still attempted to have a garden. But only half the size I used too, thought it would be a good test if I could keep up with it in these busy times, and if I can't then no biggie. Well so far its been about a month and haven't got out to weed it once. Weeds and grass just about taken over it. Got two days off early next week hope I can get out there and save it. The next week I take off Tuesday on a 3 week vacation, so its got to be weeded before I leave (and hope it doesn't get too dry while I'm gone!).
Last garden to deal with this year and started giving it a facelift yesterday. Had to use the 590 Timberwolf on the maple as I was told there wasn't enough sun getting at it. More dirt and fence tended to today.
Loon, if you want those pines to fill in good, cut the new growth in half while it isn't mature. It will branch out from there, but if you wait until it has filled out, it cannot.
I'm not wanting to start something here. I do thing this is worth looking into. use of Herbicide is often necessary. it is the type of herbicide used that is in question. I used one on my lawn several years ago. When I tried to dig it us and use it as a garden area, my tomatoes grew very deformed. I had the soil and plants tested at the extension service. I was told it was herbicide. I call the company and was told that was not possible. When I did some research, I found that indeed it was possible. Only tilling it over and over and allowing the soil to be exposed to the sun gets rid of it. I used a weed and feed product on the lawn. Not this one. http://www.inquisitr.com/2173208/fr...ide-roundup-should-united-states-follow-suit/
I know Tomatoes are very susceptible to the environment... Tobacco residue on your fingers, being planted in the same spot from within the last three years, minerals & nutrition in the soil.... So it wouldn't come as a shock that even small amount of that stuff would do that to mators...
here is a nice link to a garden forum. It is a lot like we are here on woodhoarders. http://www.permies.com/t/6521/plants/plant-tomatoes-place-year
Long story but I am not allowed to do anything heavy for awhile. Did a bunch of weeding yesterday though and that corn is looking nice Norky.
Corn is tasseled. Got a few fist sized beefsteaks. Got more zucs than I know what to do with. Cucs are starting to come on now. Green beans in a week or so.
We're getting tassels too and the stalks look healthy. Plan on making some fridge pickles this weekend. Only have 2 cucumber plants, but they are growing like crazy. Already using Jalapenos from the garden. Ran out of frozen ones last week, so it was good timing.
stopped one squash moth so far? summer and zuke are looking great but? I've covered the stem bases with garlic cloves. trying to confuse the damm things. probably won't stop'em .peas are finally comin in, all looks pretty good.
1-3" of rain on the way , times like these I am VERY thankful for having built mostly raised bed gardens. Picked 6 cukes last night and am on d ay 10 of zucchini. And if your an onion fan, RED TORPEDO! I have never been so impressed with an onion. I see why all of the hype!
Picked 4 mators this morning and an onion. Garden is setting up nice. Now I've just got to get in de-weed a bit.
