This stuff only grows 5-8000 feet up. Had a guy fresh cut me a cord and deliver it to las vegas, Love the aroma of fresh cut pinyon pine. Happy with my score.
This list, which looks pretty accurate to me for the most part, rates it up there with Hedge-apple. I guess it depends how pitchy it is... http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/wood-combustion-heat-d_372.html
Thank for the kind words, Last year I burned up about a cord of this stuff, its supposed to be the Hardwood of pines, the aroma is what I really like, so I contacted a guy that lives Close to ware this stuff grows in Utah 5000ft, and had him fresh cut me a cord, stuff is still oozing sap. Not exactly what you want for a fireplace but- I have plenty of other curred wood ready for next season. I brought the mountains to me.
Welcome to the forum illenema. This might be the first time I've seen pinyon mentioned on this forum. Sounds like great firewood!
View attachment 60833 Stuff burns pretty nice, real similar to some super dry walnut here. i think it might be in the 20's. I have some mesquite drying on the roof right above it...[/ATTACH] Wont take long to dry out
sounds like some nice stuff ( pinyon pine)I wish we had that in my area. although other charts show it quite a bit lower on the btu scale than the chart referenced above but still very high up there (Especially for a pine) http://firewoodresource.com/firewood-btu-ratings/ 27.1 https://forestry.usu.edu/htm/forest-products/wood-heating 27.1
I clean my chimney a few times per season (lots of creosote) and I've been burning Pinon for 30 years now. Pinon really puts out the heat. I'm going up Friday and cut a load of Tamarack at 8500 ft.should be cool up that high.
Yes lots of tar like creosote from the pinyon.. Enjoy the cool weather up there. heres what we had yesterday at peak heat. Scarey
Much better here today. High of 67 and very little sun so it was cool. Sort of got some hunting blood stirred up and I almost went hunting.
I know this thread is ancient but it’s the only one I could find about Pinyon Pine...I cut a load today. I forgot how good it smells both when cutting and burning. Have to wait a few more months for the burning though. This stuff was dead standing for several years. Any remaining bark falls right off. Sounds like bowling pins falling when thrown into a pile.
I must say Timberdog you get the best smelling wood on the forum! Any Eastern white cedar out there (same wood used in cedar closets/chests)
