When I checked the weather a couple days ago, it looked perfect for firewood'n! Now we have a flood watch and gale warnings... I thought I'd finally get a chance to work on the firewood hoard. Guess ill have to work on the lumber hoard instead! I have a couple of standing dead red pines that I wanted to take a look at. I managed to get the first log out before the rains came.
Wet in many places today. Tis okay though. If we want it to stay green, we get rain. Looks like you made good work through the rain too.
I managed to dispatch a pallets worth of red oak and some maple this morning before the drizzle started. Tossed a tarp over them before it started. Don't feel like going backwards on the splitting day. Got a pretty steady rain coming down now.
Yeah here too - started about 11am. I think I'm going to saw them into full dimension 2x4s and 2x6 for now. I thought the blue staining would go all the way thru the log, but its actually pretty clear after the first few inches. So I might saw some of the better pieces differently. I'm working on a better sled jig for my bandsaw before I slice them up.
My grandfather actually planted this tree when he was working for my great grandparents orchard - back in the 40's or 50's I think. There is a couple acre grove of them on the one end of my property. The trees are way too close together now for their size, and about every third or fourth one is dead. All the logs are just as straight as this one. Pine was his favorite wood to work with, and he left me a vast supply.
That's a great piece of family history- appreciate ya for sharing it, Shawn. Makes my long for a conversation with my grandpa- he passed away in 1999... He was my inspiration for carpentry work. Miss him for sure.
I spent a lot of the weekend in the basement due to the weather outside. I haven't sawn the pine up yet, but here's some maple I'm really happy with. These boards are 5/4 x 6" x 8.5', give or take. The camera on my phone and the lighting in my basement can't do them justice. These pieces are going to be something really special.
