So how do you tell if a cylinder is factory or aftermarket? I looked and see no Stihl markings. I would assume they are all marked in some way. The saw is an 066. I added some pics maybe that will help.

    Thanks guys.

I bought this saw off ebay...yeah yeah I know not the best idea lol. Well it was stated as running and idling properly. It will not idle for long no matter where I set the low at. Also sounds like I hear hissing around the decomp. Pulled the plug and see a lot of scoring on cylinder walls and the piston. So I started looking at the cylinder for factory marks..also it is a funky grayish black color. Never saw a Stihl cylinder that color. So that got my suspicions up.

The seller of course has a no refund policy. None of the issues I stated were mentioned in the description otherwise I wouldn't have bid. Especially for what appears to be a cheap Chinese jug. So I described all the issues to him and asked for a refund. We shall see what happens. If he doesn't come through I will involve ebay.

Does this sound unreasonable on my part?

All Stihl OEM parts are marked in some way, shape, or form. Cylinders usually have some markings on the top and a series number plus the "S" logo near the base.

That's what I thought but wasn't positive. I see nothing on the top. Plus the more I look at it the decomp looks sorta cheap. I'll have to check the base again.

Stamped near the base from the ones I have removed. Here is a pic from 038M, you can make out the markings on the base, left side.

Shine a light at the base and see if there's any markings there. The newer KS cylinders are a different shade than the others.

OK I will do that when I get home. I messaged him asking for a refund. He didn't answer my question about the jug directly. He said...I don't know what parts you switched...so I'm being accused of parts swaping. I hope ebay buyer guarantee is worth something. If not I got screwed. Even if factory with all the scoring not sure it can be saved. Man I feel so bad for being stupid and messing with ebay.

This cylinder is a cheapo chineese garbage aftermarket, dont need to look for stihl or mahle or guilardoni or ks markings or stamps, the cooling flats are fat like elephant , and the finishing is like made with a horse rasp , maybe the score marks are made because of diferend inside dimensions ( top and base )
I think that have a authorized stihl dealer near , the next time go there if you want to see stihl marks and signs

I still haven't made it home to recheck but my gut tells me you are right. I've bought several saws from eBay and never had an issue.

thats too bad man, and i agree thats an AM cylinder. why else would it be so clean and the rest of the saw looks well used. Ebay buyer protection is pretty solid and you can always provide negative feedback.

Yes I was waiting on the seller to take it back before I left negative feed back. He contacted me again and now wants me to ship it back so he can inspect it and then he can contact ebay.

Not sure how to respond. I really don't want to return it without a refund first. I can't involve ebay until wednesday...has to be three business days since I asked for a refund before they step in. The dude has 100% positive and a high score/amount of feedback...still makes me nervous to ship it before a refund.
