WOW Never thought about that. you hear a chopper & you're in a stand on a power line, better move quick.
I'm quite sure they have to walk the lines first and even on the day of cutting I think they have a couple guys on the ground but they don't get very close to that saw!
I hop they have guys on the ground cuz that's dangerous! Imagine getting that thing hung up how would you get it out if you can't land. Then what do you tell your boss afterwords.
Cool toy for sure. I could think of a few things to with that. I wonder if it could help wild land firefighters cut a firebreak?
How many times does he have to cut that thing loose from the bird? Don't think those blades would be free of jams, and if that happens it becomes an aerial anchor.
Probably cost as much for one day as 4 weeks with a crew, and the crew wouldn't be grounded if the wind picked up. Helicopters definitely have their applications, but that one looks a little clumsy to me. I would think it would make more sense to drop the trees along the edge of the power line rather then just trying to trim the branches back???
Who knew Kevin Spacey flew a helicopter and trimmed powerlines? Around here they run Jarraff's - pretty dang impressive with a good operator. The cab tilt feature is amazing, watched the guy doing my driveway, extremely efficient
That depends a lot on where the right-of-way is. When they come through here, someone first has to mark the trees. Only the trees with a X gets cut. The rest only gets trimmed. Not sure how they would mark for the pilot on where the line is. I agree it appears a bit clumsy but it must be efficient else they would not be spending the dollars.
