Oh No, not at all friend! I had hoped my experience was like yours.... Your response was far from rubbing it in, and I have not witnessed any unkind posts here either. NO WORRIES. And yes, you did encourage me that I will find a better situation There is a community college here that I plan on calling this week~ idea based upon your encouraging post You and I have conversed several times here, I appreciate your input very much
You are very kind to me . Thank you for taking the time to think about my situation I appreciate the excellent suggestions On a side note, my elementary school as a child was 1/2 US born kids, and 1/2 refugees from cambodia/laotia. Til this day I instantly recognize the gentle cadence used in speech. It's actually funny in hindsight, all our ethnicities with different languages were in the same bilingual classes learning spanish (PS, that was new back then LOL) PS One side of my family originated in MN. Lyons. Swedish/Danish/Polish/American Indian ancestry. Any similarities?
Did you actually smell alcohol on their breath? Any chance some of these guys were maybe mentally challenged individuals? I have witnessed similar behaviors with handicapped people when trying to get them to complete simple tasks sometimes. Perhaps your friend was trying to do these people more of a favor (finding work for the handicapped) then trying to do you the favor?
They have tape measures for people that can not read tape measures now; they actually mark the fractions on the tape. Of course metrics are all fractions of 10; as 1/10, 2/10, 3/10... Of course the US should have went to metrics decades ago but they didn't know how to teach metrics; they taught conversion (which was very stupid) instead of just teaching measuring.
Here is a case in point; today I needed to find the centre of a section of wood and the fractions were coming out difficult; one needs with non-metric tape measure to convert it to fractions of 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 and that was proving difficult due to the width. I decided to use my metric rule instead and the maths was simple, 13.5 / 2 = 6.75; job done.
I do believe my friend was doing them a favor, but not leaning mentally challenged, but drugs. Supposedly both were clean but I could see signs of drug use.... I tried twice to smell the ones breath, but I could not get close enough. Also, alcohol or not, I have never seen a person go from 100% to falling over inside 2 hours. Sadly I think it was pills, maybe I am too naive and it was hard liquor, no idea. I did work-study in college for the transition college (helping mentally challenged to function independently). Initially I did not think they were mentally challenged, but wondered about mental illness. Either way, I hope they both get better, it sounds miserable to me to live life wasted so much of the time. There was a congested intersection where the trains through town would back up traffic for 1/2 hour at a time. The stumbling guy walked in last week and instantly recognized him. I was stuck waiting for the train next to the park where homeless people hang out, do drugs, and drink excessively. I watched him standing on a picnic table pretending to quote Shakespear (though it was all gibbrish), including a blanket tied around his neck for what he apparently thought looked like a cape.
Kimberly, Yep, the metric system is easier and I operate in the parallel universe. I use both depending on what I am working on. I also have an exceptional cabinetmaker/furniture builder from Great Britian and John uses the Metric system all the time. Space is space whether it is measured with one system or the other. So with him we work in metric. He thinks I am very progressive (I don't know if that is good or bad). With my concrete guys we work in the feet and inches system. My roofer from Mexico also works in the parallel system because of Metric shingles. But, space is space, how you calculate that space is the question. My 2 cents.
They sell self-centering tapes - I've never really used the feature on the one we have at work. 13.5cm/2.54 cm/in - My guess you were ripping 2x6 dimensional lumber which is nominal 5.5" varies by a 1/16-1/8" depending on mill blades if 13.5m- that was a long piece of wood Just divide your whole number and add half your fraction - 3/8 becomes 6/16 -half is 3/16 Keeping your mind working while doing manual labor staves of Europeanitis
Since I started to use the computer more over the years, I now misspell many more words, and the calculator is just on click away. I think I am living proof of what you just said
Sorry to hijack your thread WW, yeah good help can be hard to find - probably because they are gainfully employed. Let's be honest: autocorrect on forums is just like Microsoft word showing all your quick missteps on the keyboard You know they don't even teach homerow anymore?
What is that? are always the most intersting threads, No Worries Except that I am a little disturbed with my typing misspellings that never happened with a pen on paper, and math in my head as well. Guess you also called my goat, I thought my illness was at fault, which in many cases it is, but the above mentioned is now chronic since I do most on computer or text. Interesting. I am determined however, that my lil one will learn to write print and cursive, and hopefully pretty as well, than take great pride in it. We shall see how far mom gets with that .......
Good help can be related to maths; Fourier transforms anyone; useful for taking an analogue input and digitising it. On the subject of good help; years ago my neighbour hired a "woodworker" to do some work around the house; I knew nothing of the man. My neighbour showed me a shelf she had the man to build for her that consisted of small square "slats". I noticed a few were split from the screws used to hold the pieces together because the "woodworker" had not predrilled the holes. I kept quiet.
My old house had "custom" cabinets. The cabinet maker had the doors uneven, holes for shelves drilled off. Nice big cabinets but not good craftsmanship.
