A friend of mine bought some Inferno soft wood pellets at Lowes recently. Being cool and damp, he put them in his P 68 to try out. I looked them over. Little dust. No strange colors in the fire. No odor. He got them at Lowes in Augusta. I called them. They have them for $257/ton, or $5.68 a bag. He didn't know that Inferno's have a crappy history. but seems happy with the way these are performing. Not a bad price for a softwood pellet if it burns well.
Inferno no longer makes their pellets, They are paying another mill to produce/manufacture/bag the pellets. Rumored to be the Curran softwoods.
Hmm, I'm surprised Lowes has pellets out this early. The price is higher than I like but I may have to buy a couple of bags for future reference.
Seriously wouldn't expect Blazer/BC softies quality from these. Maybe a decent softy, But not on the same par as the good chit from over there(west region). Just don't want you guys/gals to get all giddy and only to find they are just so so stuff. I haven't tried em or the Curran softies in some time, But I'd go in thinkin they were OK. JIC.
I'm thinkin that they're prolly going to be along the lines of the MWP softies which weren't much better than their blend, and some will argue the blend was better anyway. I just want to check them out. I had no illusions they were going to be like Blazers or LaCretes.
Gotcha, Just putting it out there. I was going to add more to my post, But another boomer was baring down on us. Got off line and barely had the PC shutdown when we lost power again. I kind of figured you boys knew what not to expect. But, Some might think, because they are softies. They will be all that. IMHO they will be on par with the average blend. But ya never know, They could be a total sleeper. Just rather have peeps not expecting much to reduce any disappointment. Some see softwood and get all gaagaa.
that can be easily understood. Hunting down pellets and good buys is a sport in itself. That being said, from what I have learned and experienced, If you really want to go gaagaa about pellets, burn them in the right stove and button up the house properly. That is a real night to day experience.
I burned a few bags of these last season. They were fine, certainly not the infernos of old. Still not sure why they didn't abandon that brand name and leave the terrible legacy behind. Anyway, they were very light in color, almost "blonde". Sub hit the nail right on the head, in terms of heat and ash - in the P68 I would put them on par with the batch of MWPs I got last year. I would buy them again.
That's my take too. The situation as I understand it is: the demand is so high for the blend, combined with the fact that the blend and softies burned similarly, making it difficult to justify switching over the manufacturing process to make them. I don't think we'll be seeing anymore MWP softies in the near future, if ever.
