Not an oak leaf. Leaf looks more like a popple leaf. Perhaps the leaf and the wood are not from the same tree?
Leaves look like popple or maybe big tooth Aspen. The wood doesn't look like Oak to me. I hope this isn't a pop quiz. I hate those.
Not any kind of oak leaf. I promise you that. Could it be basswood. I dont see much of it around here so I am not good with it as much as others. The tree bark does not look exactly right to me for mulberry but that is also a tree we dont have much of around here. Leaves from memory look right. Were there any glove shaped leaves?
Wood looks like Mulberry, not Aspen in my opinion. Leaves however look a little like Aspen, but Mulberry leaves are somewhat simular. Split a couple of rounds and that should provide a few more clues, Mulberry is pretty yellow inside.
Mulberry, at least the ones in this neighborhood have been covered in berries the past week or so. No way to miss that. We aren't that far away from each other so I'd be inclined to discount mulberry.
That sure looks like the Aspen leaves that are floating all over my property. Definately not like the mulberry in my stacks.
How old is those cuts? Looks like a lot like Mulberry to me, both leaves and wood structure... Not all Mulberry have fruits. If you split it it should be yellow color.
Are any of the leaves lobed at any point. Usually mature leaves will be lobed. They are also more elongated than the Aspen leaves. I have to admit, the heart wood seems like mulberry at a day old or so. Really older heart wood will be pretty dark. I think the debate breaker will be if the heart wood is bright yellow when its split.
Do y'all guys who cut mulberry for firewood or have it around you, does it just grow randomly in the woods in a good frequency? There pretty rare around here. More of a planted yard tree in the low country more than I see it here. As a forester in the thousands of acres I have been through I can honestly say I dont think I have ever seen one in the woods? We have one at the edge of the woods in my office parking lot. I am sure it was planted. And I grew up with one in the neighbors yard right on our shared boundary. It hung into our drive a pretty good way.
Here in Michigan, I have only seen them on the edges between blocks of trees and fields. Never seen one in the middle of any large woodlots. Birds love the fruit, so they are the likely planters IMO, although I have seen mulberry cultivars available for sale.
I have tons of mulberry in the groves around my property. They tend to grow like weeds here. People around here hate them because they think they are messy. I love that they hate them because it makes awesome firewood for me!
