Most of the small stuff was taken by the weekend warriors... ...now I've got to work for my red oak! I quartered the larger rounds at the yard. Since they are clean red oak rounds that wasn't too bad. The two smaller rounds were rolled up the ramp. Getting close to finished for the year. My storage area is nearly full. Hate to leave the rest of the oak there but I got no place to put it. KaptJaq
I will volunteer you storage in my racks. You guys that got too much high quality wood and no space.. If you have too much then Kaptn, I will build more racks! I got room to store 80 cord and would make more going back out now to split trying to get on 3 year plan!
I have a nephew that lives near Jay State Forest. Based on how long it takes me to get to his place and the amount of gas I use with an empty truck and no trailer I don't think your picking up a load of oak would be cost effective. And my delivery fees are exorbitant. I'll leave it in the work yard 'till I have room. Most likely with the size of these trunks they will still be there next season... KaptJaq
Darn, I figured as much, know the peak well less than hour mostly east of me. Beautiful country proximity to work, stores etc less than convenient.. yeah I'd have to be to do that..
There were two trunks I was working this morning. The smaller one looks like it was standing dead for a while. No bark at all. I took five 22" long rounds from that one. The one on the right in the truck bed is from that trunk, just over 20" diameter. The quartered one in the center and the one on the left came from a trunk that still had bark. There were four rounds from that tree. I don't think there will be much difference in drying time. The one with bark measures 36% moisture and the other 34%. KaptJaq
it will make a difference if you want to get to 20%. at that point i would guess it takes ~3 months to drop each percent under 25%. for me anyways. i know that when split at the same time from green wood, my limbs that i quarter are not as dry as splits from the trunk with no bark. any way about it, nice load. keep em coming!
M Man, oh man - you can say that again. Burned some white oak last winter that was an honest 3+ years in the stacks. Tho test splits measured at 20% MC or less, it still wasn't quite right yet. It did make for alot of 12 hour burns however. KaptJaq, that's a real nice haul there.
