Check out this link: https://iseesmokepa.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/wood-smoke-take-action-guide_final.pdf How nice they promote suing a neighbor that heats with wood. If anyone is interested, I have a Facebook group called Keep The Wood Fires Burning. Feel free to join if you're on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/groups/keepthewoodfiresburning/
This quote was interesting... it's OWBs they're really talking about... "A recent report by Environment and Human Health Inc. showed that homes nearly three football fields away (850 feet) from an outdoor wood-fired boilers had six times the level of particulates as control homes" ... and, not woodstoves burning dry wood.
Yes, I agree. They are talking about OWBs. But they also have created a cell phone app to report any smoke and burning. Over the Memorial Day weekend they wanted people to report campfires. And they really don't want anyone using wood stoves at all.
so what happens when 10,000 acres catches fires out west this year who is going to litigate that and against whom?
I like this "fact" they include. I wonder what they consider "high levels." They could make things more believable and/or interesting by using figures rather than being vague. "Fact Sheet on Wood Burning Burning wood results in high levels of soot, particulate matter, and carcinogenic material, and has effects similar to secondhand smoke."
I don't like that these idiots assume that all wood burning is a serious threat to everyone's health. There couldn't possibly be people that burn clean, and those that burn green wood, or trash. I think I'll start going after my neighbor's lawn tractor that rattles too much. Duhhhh...
This kind of ignorance, just makes me so mad I could spit nails. I'm glad there isn't any of those kind of people around here, at least I hope there isn't, I have a fire in the fire pit right now. Been burning inside and out for 22 years, never had a complaint but with more and more cry babies cropping up I guess it could happen
I agree, there are dumb people everywhere, example, the "genius" that moved to the west side, prevailing wind, of a corn field of an 800 acre dairy farm that doesn't like smell of manure... I live on east side smell it 2 or 3 days a year... So far the town said you moved there you can move again farm been in operation for 150 plus years. but the harassment is ridiculous. calling Government agencies when he spreads to test water quality etc.. There is burn regulations in state because of people with asthma. they call fire department or wardens every one I know including uncle won't enforce it they say call police. police say they have burn permit shut your windows.. why I like my lot better than the city..
When someone complains, it is wise to realize that there is a problem of some kind. If you can see smoke (and not a steam plume in cold air), then there is pollution. The most common reason is that poor quality wood (moist) is burned at smoldering rates in old non-EPA (no secondary air) wood stoves. Loading up an old wood stove for a long smoldering overnight burn is not a good idea..... A large stove in a small room produces too much heat, so the operator cuts back air with the result that there is incomplete combustion. Blueish smoke is a result of unburned hydrocarbons, white smoke is even worse. In Scandinavia, it was recognized a long time ago that complete combustion of wood is only possible at high firing rates with excess air. This together with a heat sink is the answer. Some people have very limited budgets and it is not realistic to expect them to be able to afford the best and the newest.
I have a neighbor here that likes to burn what ever wood he gets in for the year. He usually gets downed trees from another neighbor that has 40 wooded acres. We all get along good. I've been telling him he needs to season his wood for a year so it doesn't smoke so much and he'll get better heat out of his wood. The other night his brother was telling me they are planning to get another stack filled so there is always dry wood there. It takes time to get through but keep making suggestions and eventually they will try to get better. I've had guys tell me that their OWB dealer told them to burn fresh cut wood so it burns longer, better
I am a supporter of campfire and outdoor burn restrictions. Every time I go camping at an established campground (I would prefer more remote sites, but my girlfriend has a 6 year old daughter, so the reality is that NPS/USFS campgrounds are logistically much easier), I am up half the night with a sore throat and cough from campfire smoke. I wake up in the morning coughing up gobs of black and brown gunk that is clearly particulates I have inhaled through the night. For the record I am not a smoker, and never have been. I also happen to live about 2 miles as the crow flies from a USFS campground here in the Wasatch Mountains, and on busy summer weekends, the cloud of smoke that rises from that campground often settles over my entire neighborhood like a fog. It is unpleasant to say the least. I am enough of a realist to understand that people are going to have campfires, but they really affect my breathing and I have no respiratory problems otherwise. I would at least like to see campgrounds institute policies such as prohibiting adding more wood to the fire after civil twilight, and providing elevated grates in the fire rings to allow more airflow under the fire and to limit smouldering. I love heating with wood, and my EPA stove, but I have a strong dislike for woodsmoke unless it is an extremely faint aroma.
Yep... and mostly caused, again, by green firewood for all those campfires. It burns like a bucket of water filled with wood chips...
coming from a family with allergies I understand. but to me wood smoke is more natural and therefore less harmful then pick a city 5 o'clock traffic exhaust fumes for an hour. Moreover I have been to Malaysia, PNC etc., our air quality is much better than their's. On other hand, my cousin would have to leave his home when farmer burnt hedge row because he could catch poison ivy from the smoke from fire half mile away! But with communication and understanding people can get a long and negotiate farmer would call and family would go out to dinner on Saturday nite. Cousin stay at grandma's and go to church with family on Sunday.
I understand everyone's points here, But , government restrictions are not the answer!!! communication and education go a long way we camp in october. fire and camping are one and the same.
How about 17,500 acres right now, and it's just up the road from me. I know, we should cut all the trees down.--- RIGHT?--- Hey, that's life.
As a mason who has spent considerable time repairing chimneys I would invite anyone to go up on top while a wood fire is burning. Yes even an old smoke dragon as they are called. It'll smell like wood smoke, ie not that bad really. Now go stick your head in the heat coming from your average oil burner. You'll quickly see the difference but you'll see not much else as your eyes will be locked shut and tearing as you cough up a lung. I would imagine it's much like getting maced. Never been maced so can't be positive Even when an oil burner is not running as a mason if you allow a little debris to fall into the flue and kick up that dust at the bottom you'll have the effect of getting maced. I'm just a dumb Mason, not a scientist, but I know what real life has easily taught me. I'd rather sit next to a campfire than a barrel of burning oil.
