Around a year ago a dear friend gave me $1000.00 to help me repair my roof. I managed to buy the shingles with the money with the intention of installing them myself. My sister felt I was trying to take on too much. I still think I could have done the work; bit by bit, until it was finished. A person, that I won't mention, told my sister of a man that supposedly was a roofer; I had my doubts when he showed up without a ladder; what roofer does not own a ladder? I agreed reluctantly to allow it; I won't go into great detail about it except the man was not a roofer; his crew was young family members of his friend and they kept dropping the heavy bundles of shingles on the roof and I thought they were going to damage the ceilings in the house, they were knocking pictures off the wall. My sister was off on a day trip to the mountains and I just wanted the whole thing over and done with; they were shredding my nerves to confetti and maybe I should have went out and told them if they dropped one more bundle on the roof I would push their arses off the roof; however, I just wanted it done and them gone. I had the roof leak in my bathroom; I knew the roof vent was installed incorrectly, you don't cover the lower area with shingles. They had caulked with silicon and it had shrunk; so I pulled it off and replaced it with roofing caulk. I thought the leak was stopped. Last night we had some very bad storms and when I went to bed I noticed two bad leaks in the bathroom; close to where those vents are located. I also found a small leak in my little office which is at the other end of the house from my bathroom. There are areas of the roof where I think joints are not staggered and I know they did not install any starter strips. I have the old vents. Today I went on the net and found some roof vents for a 14 inch diameter hole which is what the old ones are sized, at Home Depot, order online only, for $36.xx. Need three of them. The purpose of this post is to ask for opinions and maybe someone with a cheaper source of vents or if I can use the old vents. Photos follow. I need to stop this leak before my ceilings are damaged. I also have some bundles of shingles left over, six or eight or more.
We use a ridge vent here. Can't help much with your roofing problems, but I would say you need to get the tree limbs that are touching the house cut back
Actually, those trees need to be cut down. I hurt my back setting up the house; never really recovered from it.
Asphalt shingles. Which was put down by someone that put every nail in the wrong place. The roof leaked but we did not know about the bad job until after the warranty had expired.
New manufactured home has an "hinged" roof system. This allows for a steeper roof that will still allow the homes to be transported on highways without lowering power lines and cable lines. When the house is on site, the roof is raised up and locked into place and shingled. The reason why older homes have some flat roofs is so they can be transported on highways and pass under power lines.
Those should have been removed when we set the house up as well as some poplar that are too close to the house. I hurt my back and we felled behind and the house place was complaining about the house sitting on their lot. It was a very stressful time for me and Mum; Dad had already passed away at that time.
OK kimberly, the vents you are discussing are humidity vents. meaning this the white 3 inch pic pipe should not be caulk ed like that it should have a rubber boot. that is an air vent for your plumbing.. the brown vents that are that size should be attached to a bathroom fan to reduce humidity when taking a shower etc.. or a stove while cooking.. how many bathroom or exhaust fans do you have? how bad is the leak? if it's a small leak it could be the condensation because the idiots.. trying very hard to watch my language here, did not connect the hose to the vent.. think like a dryer hose that goes outside they disconnected the hose and did not reattach. Sorry to tell you this I do not think shingles were installed correctly. in bottom picture to left of green leaf rows up there is a seam that looks to be 2 shingles high. theses appear to be arc or architectural shingles charcoal. was the first layer removed? if so what is underlayment did they use ice and water? a roof guard or just tar paper. so step 1 how bad the leak? this is no real roofer I've done 30 roofs that's 29 too many and it is not that hard there are instructions on the back... I am not a professional but I would not have let that go.. for little leaks that spray on TV with row boat and screen door does work for a year or 2. I hope to see you soon..
before I replaced the vents are the gaskets etc bad or where they just installed wrong? if vents are OK why put in new ones? put old ones in correctly.
No bathroom vents in this manufactured home; they were n0t required by code at the time the house was build if bathrooms had windows; it is now required that all bathrooms have power vents. The vents are attic ventilation vents; in each room is a ceiling vent; air comes from the house in summer out the attic vents; this is for removing radon gas from the house as well as providing ventilation for the roof.
Only in the big room/living/dining; the rest are flat. I will need to remove the vents, examine them and possibly replace and install correctly.
OK next question on the side that is flat do you have a gable vent and or do you have access to attic? I am sure you know this but the purpose of venting a roof is simple the conditioned air in the bottom (whether it be hot or cold) condensate when it meats unconditioned air above so the venting is air movement so it does not mold. there are several ways to accomplish. soffit to ridge vent is common think air slots under eaves to a fiber mesh at peak works best imo. also gable vents think octagon shaped shutters at end of house or the vents you have probably least effective. if budget is real tight and you know we're leak is coming from flex seal as seen on TV will buy you time. Kimberly I think you got my luck, if I pick up a stick and not dirty end put it back so I'm not stealing! a reason I don't like your type of vent is they leak all protrusions thru a roof will leak about year 15 to 20 I am guessing that is age of your house?
