Going on a camping trip next week to Ludington State Park. Looking for possibilities on places to go, eat, see, etc. Thanks!
Well, you'll be right next to the lake, so there's that. It's been many decades since I was there, so I don't remember much. I was a kid. Have fun.
Find a local place that serves local seafood like: lake whitefish, perch and/or smelt. I don't know of any specific place. I'd ask around with the locals. A quick trip to Trip Advisor turns up this place: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...s-Bortell_s_Fisheries-Ludington_Michigan.html Sounds/looks like a place to get authentic local fish.
The lake is beautiful, I'm just across the pond. 3 miles from the lake and we have 77 degrees with a nice cool lake breeze. 1 more mile inland, its downright oppressive.
The S.S. Badger carferry goes from Ludington to Manitowoc, WI. It's a coal fired steam ship, pretty cool. Might be fun to watch it come in, they spin it around on a dime in the harbor.
You could run down to Silver Lake (30 miles or so south) and go on a sand dune ride. There is at least one company there that offers those. My FIL was big into dune buggies and Jeeps several years back and we'd go there quite a bit. He scared the crap out of me a couple times. I saw a guy bury his brand new Hummer H2 on the top of test hill. As mentioned, the Badger steamship sails out of Ludington to Manitowoc a couple times a day. If nothing else, it's neat to see. Outside of that, the lakeshore area in Ludington is a nice area to spend a bit of time in.
Bortells fish market. "the project" is a giant power storage resovoir that is pretty neat. They fill it at night when power demand is low, then release it during the day to reclaim the power during peak times. Pretty cool if you like that sort of thing. I'll think of more.
Take a drive down to the dunes......you could camp there too. I forgot that the ex and I took the girls over there about 25 years ago. A friend and I built a dune buggy (for him) and took it to play in the sand about 40 years ago. Fun stuff. http://www.thinkdunes.com/
