Big inland NW Doug Fir

Found this guy standing dead. Moved it as triples as not to lose any. Stuff was heavy!!! I look goofy in the picks but i usualy do anyway.

 

That poor truck.
But, as Bogy says......"don't mind the mule, load the wagon".
Looks a little like how the Grinch loaded up the sleigh with presents for all the folks in Whoville.

That douglas fir makes some real nice wood. I took a similar one out a little over a year ago, standing right next to my house. It was still alive. (Actually, I hired that job out - I did not have enough confidence in my ability to drop it where it would be safe. As you can see, the did a great job, the top of the tree fell to the right of the swingset you can just make out in the yard, never hit any part of the house or any other tree.)

After a whole lot of cleanup! The stump is barely discernible on the bottom right corner, covered with snow.




The stump today. It is about 3 ft in dimeter (for whatever reason, the wife had me put that big round above back on it, so you can barely see another cut below the felling cut on the stump.)




All of it was hand split, and most was burnt last winter. Some is destined for next winter.

Still need to finish the job getting the stump out.

Well mr stern im sure ive never seen anyone load a little nissan that heavy, thats a nice tree you found there, you maybee just maybee mite consider a bigger pickup someday. Kudos on the nice doug fir

 

Im saving for a bigger truck now. Want too do 2 cord at a time. Oh yea never sell wood at a campsite. I booked 4 cord b4 i left there

What does "moved it as triples" mean?

I cut my rounds to 16" so a triple would be a 48" log. They were heavy

 

I roll it down the hill. And the single rounds just get going way too fast and go over the road

The cluttered pile in the foreground is pine and aspen, it is hard to tell in the small photo. The tall stack in the sunshine far back and on the right is larch. I don't normally cut larch unless it is dead, it is too pretty. And I find douglas fir is pretty much as good as the larch.

Are you in cheney? Larch is crazy beatiful stuff i only cut it when its dead too. The spot im in right now has 5 or 6 dead ones that are real good size 16"-20" at the butt, i cant wait to haul those out. Nothing like a big load of tammarack!

I imagine you get a buck or two more for the tamarack than the fir.

I hear the huckleberries are going to be early this year. What are you seeing?

Came out bigelow gulch actualy. Havent seen anything for berries yet but il be the first to see em, they are all over fernan moutain were i cut. Very popular area for picking. When do they usualy pop up?
