Well looks like the Ash borer has made it to my neck of the woods. It was about 3 miles through the woods/swamp last year. Their are some big trees in the neighborhood, 70-80 footers that started showing some "woodpecker damage" last year but they were all leafed out for the most part. As of today, one 80 footer has about 30 leaves and the other has 0. All Ash trees under 18" diameter are dead. Probably getting a lot more ash in the future.

Ash is good stuff. I usually take 4-5 ash to one oak or maple here each spring.

Where you at in IN? It looks like a few western and southern counties are the only ones not yet affected. I've seen a few dead Ash but I don't know if it's the borer....

Here in Indianapolis, you are lucky to see a tree at the dump that ISN'T ash. Little fuggers are killing them all!
Which reminds me, I need to call my tree guy to find out why my ash tree hasn't been injected for prevention this year yet!

I am way North in Laporte County. I am half a mile from Michigan, just outside a small town called New Carlisle. We were good until this year, but Saugany lake, about 1.5 miles through the swamp was devastated last year. Didn't take long to move here. Although I am sure they were here we just didn't see it yet. I told my neighbor it looked like his tree was dying last year but he did not think so, oops! It is big. and on a 20 degree or better lean so I am sure he will have to have a tree service drop it. More wood for me I hope.

One good thing about it is that the ash trees will stay standing for many years so you don't have to rush to get it done. We've been cutting ash for 13 years now and still plenty to go.

I've had some tree length Ash delivered to me here in Mass with with signs of the little green creature making his rounds. Good for the firewood folks, not so good for the people who lost these trees.

Will it hold up well as long as it's still standing? Does the bark fall off after a few years? How dry will it get standing?

Most holds up great but we've had some that was pretty dry. Only a couple limbs bad so far and 2 trees broke off in big wind. We did have several small trees fall this past year though that had broken off at the roots where they rotted. Looks like maybe about a foot to 1 1/2 feet at the bottom where it won't be good; a bit punky but the rest looks great.

Here is one that broke off on its own. As Dennis said , first 2 rounds were punky but after that it was good solid wood.

No. I do a fair amount of landscape work so I'm always dumping brush, bush trimmings, branches, etc. All the dumps here grind it all, dye it, and resell it as mulch.

If you need wood, go to the dump and pass out your number. If your house is closer than the dump to their job, you'll get the wood everytime...especially if you tip with beer or 20$ bills.

Also not good to be transporting infested wood to non infested areas. That's spreading it faster, and the trees will have less time to adapt :headbang:
