No, that is considered child abuse in this day and age. Also, I have seen enough examples in my life to conclude that it doesn't work and only makes matters worse.

What I don't understand as it pertains to the law (in some states), if I hit my neighbor or my wife I can (and will) get arrested, but if I hit my child its legal.

:popcorn::popcorn: Here we go, this should get interesting to say the least. From my own standpoint, I have a distinct recollection of my mother doing that very thing when it was called for. It made my decision making on a number things I was about to, or thinking about doing a lot easier. Was I a damaged child from this perceived abuse? Nah, don't think so. Did it shape my thought patterns to use better judgments as I grew up? Yup, you bet. Now in this modern age, when kids are raised by using "the book" as opposed to common sense, this is considered "barbaric abuse". This is a prime example as to why I am glad to have lived in the era I did. Respect for other people, their property and just plain respect in general was a norm. I missed out on the "entitlement" phase that most kids live under today.
Oh well, I guess under the current "parental standards", I am to be considered damaged goods..............
just sayin'...................now let the games begin.........................

I had a 2x4 with my name painted on it, It was stored in a closet just off the kitchen. I suppose to it was meant as a deterrent but when it came time for me to make the right choices that didn't always happen. The stick came out of the closet a number of times and my dad swung it at inanimate things (bench in garage, side of house) but it never reached me. And times when I thought it might get used on me I just ran like hell, I was faster than the old man. :p

I got the back & the open side of the hand numerous times growing up, only the belt once(but man, did I deserve it!!!)
My brother (older by 2.5 years) got the foot (2x's, from the basement to the first floor, three steps at a time!)
I grew up with kids that had far more relaxed parents than mine- some entered adulthood successfully; others, not so much.
As an honest side note- my brother has done very well financially but has NO relationship with our family,
where as I was a bit of free spirit for several years, before settling down, and I still enjoy & respect my family.

It's sad that your brother has written the family off. I haven't been in touch with my brother in over 5 years either, he has stopped talking to both our parents and myself for some choices he made. He didn't like our opinion...

My brother got regular beatings-- sometimes nightly and for what seemed like hours. He spent a good stretch in prison. I really don't see how it did him any good. It wasn't until after her turned forty that he finally got his life together. I was never beat, but lived under the fear of it. Of course, I was more concerned about disappointing my parents than I ever was about being bloodied and bruised.

    You done good, sir....
To read of your brother's young life happenings is upsetting. While not daily, we were subjected to what I call the outlet of my parent's marital strife- but I'm like you, I sought their approval over beatin's- just that sometimes I couldn't avoid being a mischievous boy and that's something kids do- & should get to do- unless it involves setting the grass lot below your house on fire when you're only 7:whistle:

Though I was a perfect child and never ever did anything bad...... once in a while Dad might have disagreed with that assessment and I got spanked a few times. I then adjusted my activity accordingly... and, I survived... :D

We were threaten with the"Just wait till your Dad gets home" which was good enough to keep us in line usually. And then their was the "If you get a spanking in school then you will get one twice as hard when you get home"!

One thing I learned the summer after me and "my buddy" set the grass on fire, besides "your not allowed to play with that boy again" is that if you do play with that kid again, and he grabs hold of your bike while you're trying to ride to the house, and in his bullying style says "you ain't going nowhere" and you think your dad won't hear you scream in said bully's face "Get off my F@$&in' bike!" (At like 120 db's:hair:).......
Yeah, that's when I got to knowing that blaming that idiot on the language(aka lying) would result in "the belt":startled:across the bared cheeks:eek:
    6 times:eek::(
At like 2 in the afternoon:headbang:
    no supper that night:eek:
no bike riding for a week:eek::(
And NEVER BE AROUND that boy again....
I obeyed, for about three weeks, and they never found out:wacky:
But I wanted to tell them just how stupid a thing that kid did all by himself.... And yep, I sat back & let him do it..........

Hitting someone as being a learning process is generally abuse. Frustrated parents acting out. My Mother was one of nine kids, she says she was never hit, yet she hit me many time for things like not being neat. My Dad used to hit me with a razor strap. Worse to my brother. I loved both my parents but more so once I became an adult. My brother never recovered. My younger brother was not spanked and always had a good relationship with the parents. I can only see it when they keep putting their selves in harms way. Parents who "have" to hit need help. There are far better ways to deal with acting out, then by acting out.

Parents ran on a checkmark system. Dad worked shifts so we were with mom during the day. Every time you did something bad you got a check. Each check earned you a crack on the bare rear with a belt when dad got home. 'Time for the woodshed'. When mom got tired of writing checks the wooden spoon came out. God help you if your butt happened to break one as you didnt know what item would be in close reach that she would grab next. I got a lot of checks. And a hard @$$ to prove it. Honestly tho, i didnt straighten up until my dad took off and i had to be the man of the house. It wasnt as bad as i make it sound. I was badder than i make it sound, lol.

We have never hit our pets or child, though we have threatened dogs in the past with the pop of a rolled up newspaper against our palms. No spanking with our child, and no spanking with dogs, ever.

Whatever you do, don't laugh when your mom whacks your butt with a wooden spoon! :emb: All I'm gonna say is, the next spoon was bigger :hair:
